David, It seems like there are definitely more Hawks here in Bush. I have been finding blackbird feathers on the ground and actually saw two kills by a hawk in the past month. After he catches the bird he just goes to the ground and proceeds to pluck them (very rapidly) and eat them. All he leaves b...

GOT HIM! Saw him sitting on the porch of the Troyer this morning around 8 a.m. I was worried cause I had a meeting and had to leave by 8:30. I resigned myself to the fact that it wasn't going to happen today. Then, when I went out to take the trap out before I left (I wouldn't want any PMs getting ...

news video/Hawks in New Orleans

The video link below is from a newscast tonight about Hawks becoming plentiful in New Orleans since Hurricane Katrina. Very interesting and it shows different kinds of Hawks. Girl, that is the EXACT same pellet rifle I have! Darn, now I can't blame the gun for my zero success rate. I got to give you props for perseverence in practicing. You did give me some good ideas about setting up the shepherds hook and cap (silly me - I clothespinned a paper plate to a bush that mov...

I am SO jealous! I cannot tell you how many shots I've taken with a pellet rifle and missed EVERY one. What kind of gun are you using and how much time did you spend practicing?

If you had Martins last year, the bluebirds won't be able to keep them away. I keep my cavities plugged until the first scout lands on my set-up. No use having open house for the interlopers. My first year I had a four gourd set-up and a bluebird pair raised a family in one of the gourds, right alon...

You guys are GREAT! I knew I could count on you. I have used the Starting Fluid in the past. I have a grand total of 3 sparrow kills. Though there was one (my very first) that got away (Didn't use enough ether -he and I went round and round in the garage till, still in a drunken stupor he outwitted ...

How to dispose of trapped sparrow.

This lovely sparrow couple have been working on their nest in my Troyer horizontal with a Conley II entrance for the past week. The nest looks great so I think it is time to trap them - actually I just put the trap in. Now I am worrying about getting them out if I DO trap them or if I manage to trap...

Tom, What a nice neighbor you are! I've started one of my neighbors off with housing, too. Unfortunately, he didn't follow through with my directives so I have to take care of his colony and mine. I also have two elderly friends that I help to care for their colony. I do enjoy watching my PMs making...

Tim, Phew, that sounds like a LOT of work to me. I think I'll just sit on my front porch; sipping tea, watching the Martins bank and glide around my colony, listening to the lyrical sound of their cheerful song. That is... after I've done my nestchecks, inspected the site, chased off the resident ha...

I would stop playing the Dawnsong as soon as you get a PM that stays overnight. Once you have a "boarder", you won't need the Dawnsong anymore. He or she will attract other Martins to your site. In my experience, the Dawnsong also attracts hawks, so that is another reason why you would want to stop ...

I spoke with a rehabber and she said to keep him quiet for a few hours and time would tell if his injuries were fatal or not. Unfortunately, he died within the hour. I get so upset when I think of him flying so far to get here only to die. He was a beautiful ASY male. It was a Troyer with a Co...

wing entrapment need help FAST!

My first wing entrapment of the season in a Conley II this morning. I saved the bird that was on the inside, it flew away when I opened the gourd. But the beautiful male that was trapped was pecked on the back of his head. I put him in a box and he is just laying there, still alive and alert, but pr...

Tim, If I know you, you will be agonizing till you hear that first musical note of a Martin's call. I'm sure you are plumping up the bedding and readying the site for the newcomers. If Martin's had a nose like my Basset hound, Buford, they would surely follow your scent to your new home, where luxur...

Ungrateful or unfaithful?

Well, my lone female, the one that I pampered with handwarmers and crickets last week, going out in rainy freezing weather every day during that awful cold spell, left me as soon as the weather warmed up and the sun came out. I've been watching for two days now and there is no sign of her. I s...

Thanks all, for the help. I will monitor the situation with much trepidation. I've done most of the suggestions already but I suppose there are always exceptions to the rules - darn it.
