Watching babies hatch - Priceless!

The babies are hatching right on schedule in my nest-cam gourd. You know it, I am glued to the TV screen! My PM pair are the BEST parents ever. Mom cleans up the mess and gets some well-needed nourishment by eating the eggshells after the babies hatch. Then she sits on the nestling to keep it warm. ...

I will put up netting for snakes around the bottom of the columns but if they can climb up brick walls, what is the point. I think it has been happening in the morning because that is the time that I've noticed the parents distress. The eggs are never taken - only the nestlings when they begin to cr...

Feeding station for hawks?

Perhaps I've hit on a solution for Hawks hunting my Martins OR perhaps I've created an attraction. Hmmm? Our resident hawk seems to be content to take doves from my backyard feeding station and he has been ignoring my Martin colony. I've watched him soar down, grab a dove and proceed to pluck...

Barnswallow chicks eaten, AGAIN

Last year my returning Barnswallows didn't raise any of their nestlings to fledge because both times they had babies, something came and ate them. Unfortunately, this year, the same thing has happened to their four day old babies once again. I noticed the parents screaming the other morning and flyi...

Wow, those pictures are great! The hummingbirds have been in Southeast Louisiana for about a month now. But the numbers seem to be down from last year. I hope more show up cause my four year old granddaughter just loves to sit by the window and watch them feed.

Are you SURE that they didn't sneak into their gourds while your weren't looking? This time of the year, they don't mess around, especially if there are only one or two pair, they just fly straight into the gourds right at dusk or nightfall. It's easy to miss them. They might be socializing at anoth...

You NEVER want to give sparrows a place to nest. They will only produce offspring that you will have to eliminate from your site when they come calling - and they WILL come calling!

I have those invisible decals (people can see through them but birds can see them on the outside) on my windows and they work really good. I get very few bird strikes since I put them up two years ago. It is so sad when they get hurt flying into the glass. I always feel that it is my fault.

It has been my experience, at least in my neck of the woods, that Martins prefer gourds. My gourds always fill up first. I am considering taking down my houses next year and getting more gourds. The houses are much harder to do nest checks in.

Sparrows have nested in my gourds but the minute I open up the houses - they rush on in! Emil is right, they much prefer houses. After trapping and killing two sparrows this year, the male finally gave up and left my site. Though I am wondering if the reason he left is because the sub-adult Martins ...

Opening up the site is very important, you did a good job. Having to sacrifice trees is one of the drawbacks of being a good landlord.

David,

Definitely put in the bolts. When I had that pole the snaps broke the first year - thank goodness it was before babies were present! You can imagine my angst.

I've tried plugging up the cavity but they just move to another cavity. This year I've been trapping and it really doesn't matter whether I trap the male or the female, whichever one I don't trap always comes back with a new mate. But, they must have a good memory because if I put the trap back righ...

I have three very NOISY dogs who go tearing in and out of the NOISY doggy door incessantly, all day long, barking and running around the PM poles with me chasing behind them screaming at them to HUSH! My husband, even though I've asked him not to, insists on cutting the grass just when the PMs are h...

As a former owner of a S&K pole, I always kept mine at 10 ft height and when it was really windy, lowered to 8 feet. The birds didn't mind and I had peace of mind. My advice is to get a stronger pole for next year if you can afford it. If you are going to be an involved conscientious landlord, havin...
