Kathy, I have other unoccupied cavities on poles that are easier to raise and lower. This particular pole only has two other gourds that now have PM nestlings that are 14 days old and I don't want to disturb them by my "jerky" movements of the pole. Emil, You are SO right! This was my first pole and...

I've been having trouble with MIssissippi KItes cruising around my gourd racks for the past week. They are beautiful birds but I wish they would move on.

Well, I was so excited that I was mistaken, it was the female I trapped. Contrary to what some of you mentioned, either the male abandoned the nestlings, because he never showed up after female was eliminated this afternoon OR he is a Romeo because there is another pair of sparrows that were scoping...

No luck yet. Today I wrapped some electric tape around the inside of the circular trap opening to make it smaller for them to fit through - and set the wire at the very edge of the metal trap drop plate. Now, I'm worried that the tape has made the trap too heavy because they have been trying to get ...

Well, I tied grasses around the loop and put it back up. But, I feel sad cause there are four little tiny babes in the nest now. And, what if I only just catch one parent? Will the other try to kill my PM nestlings in the next gourd? This is so upsetting. And the pole that it is on is very hard for ...

Thanks so much everyone for the suggestions. Carlton, I am too scared to use the glue traps. I know the sparrows probably have eggs by now and they would not let the martins near their entrance BUT, what if???? Yep, too scared. Kathy, I like the way you think! Unfortunately, no trees nearby t...

It is a troyer trap and the birds push it in and then the door drops down. I think they are just going through the hole of the trap cause they are small. I did trap a male sparrow in another gourd this season with the same trap. Perhaps I can put some grasses around the hole of the trap to make it s...

sparrows laughing at trap

I've had a sparrow trap in my Troyer horizontal gourd for a week and the sparrows are going in and out at will. I've checked the trap on numerous occasions and it is working fine. I have eggs and nestlings in the gourds on either side of it so I don't want to make the sparrows too mad by taking out ...

First kill of the season

Well, my happy PMs haven't even been here for two weeks and already the carnage has begun. One minute there was a bustling, chirping colony of happy Martins hanging out in their new digs and the next time I looked out the window there was not a Martin in sight. A walk around the gourd site led me to...

elbows for ventilation on Troyers?

I am considering putting elbows on my Troyer Horizontal gourds this year for added ventilation. Last year was my worst year ever for jumpers and I think it was because of the heat in late June and July, not to mention the drought conditions. Since I am in Southeast Louisiana I don't really have to w...

Thanks all for the great advice. I fed him four times and then put him back in the nest around 5 p.m. I think I found the right nest. So far this morning, he is still in the nest and I've seen the parents going back and forth so I'm keeping my fingers crossed. I was tempted to keep him and care for ...

I feel your pain, we have been loosing jumpers all week. It's awful to watch and heartwrenching. Hang in there. Hopefully next year won't be so bad. This is the first year in the six years that I have been a landlord that I have lost so many babies.

how many crickets for jumper?

I have a jumper around 22 days old. How many crickets should I give him and how often? I've forced him to take four and then let him rest for a while. I plan on putting him back in the nest around four 0'clock this afternoon, after I've fed him some. Is that a good idea or should I put him right bac...

Louise,
I applaud you and others who have taught their PMs to accept feed from the feeders. If only I had been successful with that. :???: I try each year but with no luck. Good for you!

I have to make myself look out of my front windows at the Martin housing. Spotting another fledgling on the ground fills me with angst and worry. I've found two dead so far and placed three others back into a nest (just an educated guess that it is the one they've fallen from). I have stopped doing ...

David, My husband would agree with your comment. :???: Astrid, So good to hear from you. Watching those naked nestlings trying to lift up their scrawny little necks when their parents come in with the bugs is a hoot and the love and the care that the parents give to them just warms my heart. Though,...
