Re: Planning now for 2021

After an unfruitful first couple of years I played a Martin recording at 4am, noon and 5pm. Worked really well to attract interest, took a couple of more years to get regular nesters.

Re: Early evening greatness

I had a huge smile on my face this morning when I noticed a flock of maybe 25 or 30 Martins flying all around in formation :) Not sure if this was composed of my eight pairs of adults or just some from another area. I have never seen that many Martins, what fun.

Re: My gourds are stuck at the top and won't come down

How high is the pole? Any chance you can reach it with a long painter's extension pole to give it a tug? If it's critical you need to get the gourds down you can rent a man lift, the small ones can be towed with a vehicle.

Re: Found a youngster on the ground at lunchtime

And found escapee #2 about five minutes ago on the ground. This time I checked my logbook to put the chick in a gourd with only 3 chicks.

6-17-2020 nest check update

Oops, I missed a couple of weeks of nest checks. We had some very beneficial rains and I didn't want to put on my clodhopper mud boots. Anyway, since 6-1 I discovered three gourds with mites and treated those three yesterday. I put 5% Sevin in all of the tunnels today (and rescued a 20 something day...

Found a youngster on the ground at lunchtime

I was going to treat all of the gourds with Sevin today and when I walked up to my pole I found about a 20-something day old chick on the ground. It seemed okay so I lowered the gourds and put it in a gourd on that side that I knew had chicks. It might be the correct gourd or not (probably not since...

Re: Nest check yestrerday, three gourds with mites (and a question)

Thank you again guys! I should have thought about treating all of the gourds - good point. I'll do a nest check and treat the other gourds and do the tunnels today. The chicks are between three and four weeks old. My first hatch was about 5-22, by 6-1 all but one set of eggs hatched.

Nest check yestrerday, three gourds with mites (and a question)

I'll update my old thread about my nest check recording I started May 19 but I have a question for you Martin landlords. Out of 12 gourds, 8 have chicks and of those 8 with chicks, 3 have mites. Early afternoon yesterday I treated the gourds with 5% Sevin (about 1/4 teaspoon between the gourd wall a...

Re: Best Cameras for gourds

I've been thinking about that myself for next year. My experience with webcams began about 20 years ago when I had one overlooking my Koi pond. I haven't research tiny cams yet but whatever cam is suitable will need power, ideally the cam will have power over Ethernet capability (POE) so a separate ...

Re: Best Cameras for gourds

Do you want to install a cam on the Martin house itself on your house looking at the Martins? How are your IT or network skills?

Re: How should I prepare for next year?

I have 12 Troyer gourds up and seven or eight Martin pairs this year. Sometime this fall I'm going to add another pole and dozen gourds.

Re: Tried to talk him off the ledge

Talking wasn't getting very far with this guy. He decided he was going out for a walk and I wasn't sure if he was going to Peter Pan off the porch or not. I asked my son to join me so I lowered the rack while he stood by to catch him if he jumped. Well he was just hanging out. I picked him up and t...

Re: 6-1-2020 update..Nest check 5-19-2020

Chicks - we got chicks and one set with feathers  . These poor Martins have had thunderstorms on two days last week with some light hail. Might get more this afternoon and tomorrow. We can always use the rain but not hail. I clocked a wind gust of 43 on that first weather event. Gourds check 6...

Re: My SY Male Brought In a Female For a Look (Pics)

Congratulations! When I started playing a dawn song I think that really helped attract my first Martins. I had it on a timer to start about 4am for a couple of hours, then noon for an hour and finally at 4pm for an hour.

I found one dead Martin in a gourd entrance last year, I don't remember if he was facing in or out. Hated to find a dead Martin :-(

Re: Waking near the Martins

Although I've had my gourds up for about five years, this is my first season of being proactive and doing nest checks. I frequently walk around the general area of my gourds and the Martins aren't too bothered but they will fly off if I get within five or eight feet. Today when I did my nest check t...

Nest check 5-26-2020

I must have really upset the martins today because I had one or two dive bomb me after about half-way through checking gourds :???: . We have more chicks, yippee! The first set of chicks have really grown, they must be two or three times their size when I first saw them. And another gourd had chicks...

Re: Crushed Oyster Shells ??

You could put them in a cloth and gently whack with a hammer or use the smooth side of a meat tenderizer as a hammer. I made a platform feeder a week ago and placed it about 25 feet from our gourds. I put dried mealy worms on the platform, I've had some of them show interest but they haven't landed.

Re: Nest check bonanza and approach to Cowbird egg?

We used to get a bunch of cowbirds every spring on our feeders, I would pick off 15 to 20 of them every year then they stopped showing up. I might see two or three now in the spring but they move on. Maybe word got around this wasn't a safe place  . I never saw one on my gourds , I'm not sure ...
