Re: Do Birds Leave?

If there are no females it is possible the males moved on to other colonies/areas to search for mates. Otherwise predators in the night (owls) could have taken them or run them off. They will sometimes land and shake the housing and chase after the fleeing birds into the night.

Glad you’re having success kegger!

I have several now fledged and flying quite well. Luckily there seems to be no hawks anywhere so these guys are very lucky so far and the weather has been beautiful.

Re: What's the best hole to use

In my opinion they entered Conley II just as easily as a round hole . I have also made a modification to a troyer horizontal with a cling plate and clinger entrance. The martins can enter them and some chose them over the much easier Conley II with porch entrance. Point being if they want to nest th...

What a shame sorry this happened at your colony. Please keep us posted on any re-nesting attempts. I sure hope they do renest.

Re: 4th Year Trying

Martins tends to prefer dark and deeper cavities. My MIL has a house like that and the martins won’t touch it. The cavities are small and the light goes right in. I would recommend hanging some gourds under it before giving up and playing the dawnsong all day everyday when the martins are moving thr...

Re: What's the best hole to use

As stated above you can purchase Conley II adapter plates. Also S&k manufacturing is a good place to find crescent and clinger plates. All of these will help prevent starlings. Generally you have to enlarge the round hole since these entrances are sometimes wider then the standard round holes. Simpl...

Re: What's the best hole to use

I have started a colony with crescent entrances. If I can do it anyone can. If you have starlings don’t use the round holes. You may have lost that pair of martins already. I have had success with Conley 2, crescent, and clinger. I would say conley 2 requires less of a “squeeze” for the martins to e...

Re: Fledglings in Louisiana.....??

I have one nest that’s about a week from fledge. One easy way to prove the point is fledglings have the distinctive calls they make to communicate with their parents/call for food.

Here are some from the check I did today. I have babies almost ready to fledge to newly hatched. It is interesting to see the difference in some of their choices for nesting material.

Re: They were here...

I disagree. I would play the dawnsong 24/7 if you can get away with it. I started two colonies like this and didn’t stop until I had 4 birds. Of course if you have close neighbors this could be unrealistic and inconsiderate. Yes even a single bird can attract more but what about all the passing bird...

Re: Frustrated PM Landlord Looking for Tenants

I started two colonies one off my driveway, and one behind a business in the retention area. Both got their martins from me playing dawnsong 24/7 until they had at least 4 birds. It never seemed to the bother the birds even playing all night. At the business I started the player Friday night and by ...

Martins are larger then tree swallows. The male and female Martin are the same size. It sounds like you have a pair of martins. Listen for the males song Good luck

Re: Frustrated PM Landlord Looking for Tenants

Yes play the dawnsong all day on repeat. I would just use a CD boom box in a plastic bag to keep it dry from rain. The martins travel so high up in the air they are likely to not notice your house unless you get real lucky. Don’t worry about the round holes you can attract them without them. Your ho...

Re: Invader in the sky

I have a drone and they learn really quick to ignore it. I obviously keep it away from their housing. If someone was flying their drone near my colony I would eliminate it. If it is a good professional drone they can likely see everything in real time. Simply approach the drone with a shotgun and it...
