Re: Newbie/Confused

Nice setup. Talk about diving in head first. Be patient and play the dawnsong all day everyday until there spending the night. It won’t scare them off it makes them think there’s an active colony and makes them want to stay and be a part of it.

Re: Nest check bonanza and approach to Cowbird egg?

John, Check out the Migratory Bird Treaty. Ed Lots of birds on this list of protection have open hunting seasons every year. Cranes, waterfowl, dove, snipe, quail, just to name a few. Meanwhile cowbirds who thrive on our forest clearing are overwhelming many songbirds who are in threatened numbers....

Re: My birds don’t stay overnight... why?

Sometimes a male will claim two nests and tries to defend them both he may start to build a nest in the second but quickly focuses on the correct nest in a few days. I have never noticed a single bird build a nest but who knows.

Re: Would appreciate some coaching, New at this.

They’ll eat the eggshells if they want you can’t over due it but don’t put them inside the gourds. Also I wouldn’t do to much change to the gourds if they are about to lay eggs. You don’t want to confuse or discourage them. You may want to wait until they are setting the eggs before installing any g...

Re: Turn off the Martin recordings now?

I think you are well on your way. If you see a lot of fighting then they like your site. Just keep doing what you’re doing. As far as the recordings it is up to you it’s not going to hurt but can only help bring in a stray passer by here and there. Your current birds will also be big attractors of n...

Re: Do Martins Ever Abandon One Site For Another After Fledging?

2625188B-AC8F-4CFB-A5C4-CCDF56345323.jpeg I have had 100 new martins at least using the housing to rest and a large dead tree to rest and preen. When they all take flight it is quite a site. I believe these are nearby families who are starting to gather for their trip back south. I doubt many if an...

Re: Do they need privacy at first?

As long as you replace gourds not being occupied they won’t care. Tunnels can give them some predator and blowing rain protection. I sure know crows can’t reach the babies in the back of a gourd with a tunnel.

Re: My birds don’t stay overnight... why?

They are out feeding and socializing with other martins. They are likely sleeping at a nearby roost.

Now that they are nest building they will likely start spending the night in their compartment of choice. They spend more and more time at the site as eggs and babies come.

Mites ruined my season

I was always under the impression mites were a pest and ridding then simply made martins more comfortable. During my nest checks I never noticed any mites. I now had several nests about to fledge so I stopped dropping the racks to prevent any jumping. Today I noticed too many nests seemed to be igno...

Re: Eggs fell from house

Do you know what kind of house you have? You may want to try hanging some gourds under the house too. Get a quality gourd if you go this route. Troyer, super gourds, excluder, or s&k larger gourds work well. If you want to repair and modify the original house have fun with it. You can enlarge the ro...

I have also heard of sy males messing with eggs and hatchlings. Just another possibility.
Right and with 6x6 rooms it would be very easy for them to move the eggs out.

Re: Eggs fell from house

Sounds like these may be the smaller 6x6” compartments. These are a bit small for a Martin but they’ll use them in most cases. Do you have any sparrows around? The European house sparrows can remove eggs I believe. I have had martins reject eggs but it is generally one or two not the whole clutch. I...

Re: Week of visit no staying

At a new site it will be a while before they stay the night. When they start staying the night they’ll start building a nest shortly after. They tend to socialize in the morning but as the season progresses if they choose your site they’ll pick one cavity and start nesting and get down to business s...

Re: What's the best hole to use

It would be simple to do. Cut the new opening like a square all the way to the bottom of the door and enlarge it width wise. Then take the s&k clinger plate cut the excess bottom plastic off the plate and attach it to the door. Use your favorite adhesive. It should sit almost flush to the porch. htt...
