Re: Male feeding female?

I have not seen them feed the female but he will sometimes set the eggs and give her a chance to feed and drink. He is likely just checking in on the nest and his mate.

Re: Brand new - could use advice on housing

They like the cavities dark as stated above so you can seal off the rear opening anyway you see fit. You can drill a 3” hole in the diving wall or remove most of it they will nest in this back chamber. I never had starlings either on my farm then one day two land on my gourd rack. Start feeding in t...

Re: Brand new - could use advice on housing

When you consider an adult Martin is 6” long and a pair stays in the nest at night and they can have an average of 4-6 young who are practically the same size as the adults when they fledge you can quickly see why those compartments are too small. Expanding the compartments would be very beneficial....

Re: New 12 Troyer horizontal Gourd rack

Keep an eye out for owls. Set up a game camera if you can. Owls can and will land on gourds/housing and Shake the housing till the martins fly out in the dark then pursue them. I don’t think they would just abandon their eggs for no reason something happened. Here is a great video on YouTube showing...

Re: Vent holes

Those small holes in the neck will allow built up hot air to exit to some degree anything helps. The bo basic has a good sized round hole and is almost flush with the nest so it will vent pretty good on its own. Only other suggestion would be to drill more holes in the bottom but this is difficult i...

Re: Jumpers ???

You’ll usually have an idea if any are on the ground because the adults will be extra upset and dive at you if you approach them knowingly or not. Sometimes the parents will continue to feed them on the ground. I have only had jumpers because of mites. If you are mite free and your housing is vented...

Re: Vent holes

I'm in the south and mine are drilled out. One thing is for sure it couldn't hurt and at 90 degrees it would certainly help with some air exchange in the gourd. You could always use some white caulk or silicone to seal them back up if the need arises.

Re: gourd racks

SS, How do you like the Vertical gourds? I'm planning to buy 10 of those and add them for next year. I am doing quite well with the Horizontals but want to add a little bit of a twist. Thanks, Coolwhips They are great gourds. I don’t really see any difference between the two as far as the martins a...

I used sevin in the gourds and sprayed the outside and tunnel entrances with permethrin. Didn't harm the birds and the mites were gone.

Re: What do you do about a murderous hawk?

Deeper and larger cavities can alleviate this problem. Even 6x6” compartments could be modified by adding a tunnel. You can really get creative. Another more simple solution is putting a cage around your housing. Just make sure the mesh is large enough to allow a martin to pass through. Google some ...

Re: MY BRUTAL 2020 SEASON

I lost several just a week or so from fledging. The nests were infested with mites. The mites killed them. It was a real shame. I treated all the gourds and houses and that solved it. Many re nested and fledged successful after treatment. All we can do is learn and better our management for next yea...

Re: Disappearing birds

Any chance a snake could be getting past your pole guard? Have you noticed any crows attempting to perch near the gourds? With the crescent entrance I doubt a crow could get in but I have seen them cling to gourds and attempt to get the eggs or babies in round holes gourds the birds will usually bui...

Re: How should I prepare for next year?

You might want to just add the second gourd rack to that pole and use the bo plus gourds that way you get the inspection port. I think there under 10.00 I use some at my site and they are always occupied. Remember 6 gourds will house 12 birds so you might want to see how many return next year then e...

Re: Jumper...need advice.

I had a local wildlife rescue release 4 martins they nursed back to health at my site. It was pretty cool and they were thrilled to have a release site where they could just immediately join other martins. If you keep feeding him just don’t release him too early. It’s likely his parents won’t recogn...

Probably too extreme. The only change they seem to not get too upset about is adding a porch but even that sometimes makes them very cautious upon re-entering.

It is possible if he survives the migration. I would say your odds are 50%. There’s just no telling on a single bird but I hope he does!

Re: Would appreciate some coaching, New at this.

Martins arrive at my site in January and don't usually start laying till end of feb/march. Yet are at the colony everyday. Be patient you will see them nest building and when that's complete the eggs come. I wouldn't worry about owl guards unless you're having an issue. Add them next year if you wan...
