Re: Baby on the ground

Sharon, I left my porch light on and, like a miracle, over 30 (maybemore) June Beetles were there. I collected all of them. Those with the meal worms will be a lot to feed the chick with tomorrow. I ordered more meal worms and crickets for over night delivery. I'll give it a try. When will I know it...

Re: Baby on the ground

Sharon, I would love to do just that but I don't have the food source I need. I can order crickets and have them by the 10th but for tomorrow I just don't have the food for him. I was lucky to get the beetles because they washed out of the gutters with the rain. Most were alive and there were many. ...

Re: Baby on the ground

Hi PMDavid, I have a similar problem. I had a chick on the ground two days ago and because of the storm and concerned that it was injured I kept it and have been feeding it June Beetles, meal worms and dragon flies. From my nest checks I believe he is about 26 days old. I want to put it back in but ...

Re: Jumper...need advice.

Thanks Toy and SSMartin. I think he's been fed enough and is strong enough for me to return him to his nest. He's not ready to fledge and I can see the SY female parent is feeding the 3 currently in the nest. I've had him since the 6th so it's only the 3rd day. I can only hope and pray that nature i...

Re: Jumper...need advice.

Toy, do you mean kibble and bits? He'll be 26 days old tomorrow. I have been feeding him June Beetles, meal worms, dragon flies and scrambled eggs. He's been eating heartily but I can get kibble and bits, too.

Jumper...need advice.

Hi everyone,
I had a chick jump or was blown off its' porche. I need to decide to place it back in the nest he's from or place him in a neighboring nest where the chicks are of comparable age and parents are both feeding. Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Brent

Re: severe thunderstorm today

Keep us posted. I think this is very interesting and can provide valuable experience to all of us. I lived in Orlando for several years. Never had martins. Now I live in south Louisiana and have several. Would like to know how things go there.

What would you do?

Hi everyone, I have a nest with 4 chicks in it. It looks like only the female (SY) is feeding them but she is not bringing enough food (the chicks look thin and are begging for food). I have an adjacent nest with 5 chicks which are one day older. Both parents are feeding them. Do you think I should ...

Re: Late laying eggs

Hi everyone, I live in south Louisiana and have already had many nestlings fledge. Currently have 3 late nesters with chicks approaching fledgling age. But, not seen before, I have (what appears to be) a new group of nesting birds. A just recent nest check revealed newly laid eggs and new nest build...

Re: New nests this late in the season?

Flyin-Lowe, the one pair I can easily observe are SY Martins. The other two nests caught me off guard but I will try to identify them this week. Thanks.

New nests this late in the season?

Hi everyone, I notice a couple of days ago a pair of martins bringing in nest material. Most of my martin chicks have fledged leaving only 4 nests with chicks still in. Today I did my weekly nest check and to my surprise I discovered 3 new nests. One had 2 eggs the others had green leaves. Does any ...

Re: Bluebird problem

Be patient. If the Martins want to nest the Bluebirds won't stop them. I have a Bluebird pair nesting about 40 feet from my Martin houses. Have not had a problem. The Martins chase the Bluebirds away and the Bluebirds chase other birds away from their nest. All is good.

Re: Dead chicks and wondering why??

I wanted to update everyone on this. I did remove the dead chicks the day I discovered them. I checked on the other two living chicks the next day and prepared a new nest tray with a nest of pine needles and soft green leaves. I noticed the male, especially, was feeding them. I looked in on them yes...

Re: Dead chicks and wondering why??

Thanks Toy and Flyin -Lowe. No the nest was not wet and I'm sure they were feeding them early on. The nest is not well developed but they are in a nest tray. We really didn't get a drastic change in weather temperature so I am puzzled. They appeared a little unkept, like they were dirty looking. The...

Dead chicks and wondering why??

Hi Everyone, Hope everyone's season is going well. I just finished a nest check and discovered 4 of 6 chicks were dead in a nest. I noticed that the parents were not feeding them as often as the other ones where feeding their chicks. Why would this happen that they would stop feeding them? The other...

Re: Using feathers to attract HOSP to trap

Thanks Brad and Bird Brain. I'll check out the white millet tomorrow and I'll glue the feathers to a board to keep inside the trap. The sparrows are looking for nesting places now because they have been coming to the martin houses and are looking around. I've had to chase them away several times now...
