I've had scoldings too but never really paid much attention. Some were more aggressive then others. You have me curious. Can't wait to hear what others say.

Re: Martinwatch nest data sheet, fledged?

Yes, the missing birds could have fledged. I run into that often when I am doing my last nest checks. I count them as fledged.

Re: Is something eating this baby's feathers?

I noticed that the little chick I found on the ground earlier this season had an area where there appeared to be missing feathers around it's neck behind it's head. I concluded that it was probably pecked on. As I cared for it the feathers filled in. Is it possible that your little one is being peck...

Re: Tried universal deluxe in box sparrow trap...but

Ok. Going to give it a try. In the mean time I set my repeating bait trap near the house. I put soft cotton nest material and bread. Hope that that will attract them to the trap. Thank you.

Tried universal deluxe in box sparrow trap...but

Hi everyone, I tried the "in box" sparrow trap and nothing. I placed it in the compartment after moving the nest to the side. I even put some grass and straw on the porch...nothing. They were curious but neither entered. Now they moved to another compartment and started nest building all over again....

Re: NEW MEMBER EXPERIENCE

Welcome! This site is a great place to get all the information you need. Although I cannot answer your question about SY male behavior I can say that the more I observe the more I am fascinated by these beautiful birds. I have experienced the destructive behavior of the SY male. I was once told that...

Deluxe Universal HOSP trap

Hi all, I never had to use my "in nest box" HOSP trap until now. Today a pair began building a nest after I tried countless attempts to scare them away. I have 3 active martin nests in the same house. I do not want to cause the male sparrow to harm the martin nestlings. My plan is to remove the nest...

Re: Late hatchling?

John, This is an interesting year. I already had 70 chicks fledge this season and I thought it was all over but I was surprised to find late nesting. Right now I have 4 new nest with chicks and another with eggs that are slated to hatch this week. My last fledging is dated for August 2nd. Can you be...

Re: The Babe lives

Hi Diane, Oh so beautiful! Thanks for sharing. I wanted to let you know, too, that the little one that was found on the ground here did survive. He ate as many crickets, June beetles and dragon flies I could feed him and after about 5 days I put him in a nest of chicks that were ready to fledge. Sur...

Re: A great season has been extended.

I'm not sure. I do know that all the nest are new. No old nest was reoccupied. I'd say it's probably late arrivals.

Re: Should I remove an egg?

When I do nest checks and discover that all eggs hatched except one I leave it until my next check just to be sure. Sometimes the parents will remove it or push it to the side. If it's still there I remove it myself and make note of it in the data I keep and report that to PMCA when I send the sprea...

A great season has been extended.

Hi everyone, I had a great season with 70 chicks out of 83 eggs laid fledge. But, to my great surprise, I have another 5 new nests. Yes, this late. Normally my season would be ending. Not this year. Yesterday's nest check revealed 14 nestlings (4 different nests) and a nest with 4 eggs. Interesting ...

Re: Help! Help! Babies gone. Just one left.

Interesting post. I had a SY male enter a nest this year and 4 of 6 chicks were found dead. I was so up set. I removed the dead chicks from the nest and porch. The parents continued to care for the remaining 2 who fledged about a week or so ago. The reason I know it was a SY male that did it is beca...

Re: Questions following today's nest check

Using the PMCA Prognosticator hatching begins on the 25th with the earliest fledging on July 21. It goes by the date the 1st egg is laid which, in your case would be June 8th. Martin's lay 1 egg per day until a clutch of 1 - 8 eggs is complete. Good luck.
