Baby stuck

Came home from work to 100 degree temps with 110 heat index and 15-20mph winds. I have the Bo11P gourd within a gourd to allow airspace between and have vent caps. Kind of built in shade. Saw a Martin with a partial wing entrapment. Looked close to fledging and probably decided to back in. Got it un...

Re: Heat Index

Near 100 degrees with heat index 105+ the next 3 days. Babies anywhere from 15-25 days old. Fingers crossed my Bo11+ gourds with vents keep them cool enough.

Re: Heat Index

Yikes!!

Looking at mid to upper 90's with heat indices over 100 degrees here from about Wednesday through the weekend. Have babies due to fledge the first week of July. Hope my Bo11+ gourd within a gourd with vent caps does the trick and I don't get any jumpers.

Good luck to you!

Re: Mites

That's kind of what I assumed/hoped. I had about 5 of my 16 gourds where I noticed a small amount on the outside of the gourd that I had to take care of. My problem is that one or two of my nests are now close to fledging, so lowering my gourd rack at this point to recheck the nests isn't going to w...

Mites

Do mites only appear on the exterior of gourds when it’s hot and sunny or would they also be seen when it’s 85 and cloudy?

Re: Very Warm Martins

Apparently today is suppose to still be 90 degrees, but then 80's. As far as rain goes, we could REALLY use some. I'm a bit of a weather nerd. Most places won't get as much rain as they need. Will be pretty sporatic for most places. Some places will get a couple inches over the next week, and some w...

Re: Very Warm Martins

I see you are in Kansas as well. I believe today is the last day in the mid 90's. We should have a little cooler air in store for the rest of the week. Next year you can add 90 PVC as vents. You get the kind with threads on one end and then caulk around it. I did that on my older gourds before I pur...

Re: Very Warm Martins

I have Bo11+ gourds, which help. I also will shoot water up and over so it falls on the gourds. I'm not sure this really does much however, but it's worth a shot. Never tried the ice deal. My nests are a bit larger/fuller this year so I wouldn't really have much room to try that. Good luck and finge...

Re: Heat index

I firmly believe the Bo11+ helps in the heat since it has an outer gourd and an inner gourd with a space for air flow in between, as well as the vent caps. Basically, there is no direct sunlight on the inner gourd, which I would think keeps the temps down just a little. One more day of the mid 90's ...

Re: No more gourds for me

I have always had gourds and never had a problem. Have Bo11+ gourds now. Maybe stick to one thing instead of offering many different types of housing. Maybe it all depends on location, etc..

Re: Heat index

We have pretty consonant 15-25mph winds, so I’m helping that will help out. I had the PVC elbow vents in my old regular gourds. Haven’t put any on my Bo11+ as I hadn’t thought about adding to the cap openings. Hoping I’m good. Haven’t decided a way to add shade to my Gemini as it’s my first year wit...

Heat index

Heat indices near 100 degrees the next 3-4 days here in Kansas. Have a lot of babies anywhere from 3-10 days old. Hoping my Bo 11+ gourd within a gourd and vent caps do the trick. Ourlter shell white gourd with inner shell black gourd and an inch of space between the two for insulation/air flow. Fin...

Re: Crazy weather night

I’ve lowered it down about halfway. It’s a Gemini on 3” square pole. Gourds are now at about 8 feet off ground. Seems pretty low, but I’ll be less worried if I leave it there. I assume this won’t bother the Martin’s much for a day or so?

Crazy weather night

Crazy weather night in store here in Kansas. Potential for large hail, 80mph wind gusts and flooding. Plan on lowering my Gemini rack with 3" pole at least a third of the way, if not half, and hope the Martin's don't mind. Will be a stressful night for myself and my 12 Martins

Re: questions on supplemental feeding

I live in Kansas, and 20mph winds is just a normal day. Martin’s seem to have no problems. Here today, we have 20-30mph with gusts to 45mph. It’s sunny and 80 degrees. They seem to be feeding. I assume they find areas on opposite side of tree rows, etc, and feed there.

Re: Air Rifle Scope Upgrade ??

The Gamo Accu-Whisper Pellet Gun is a "breakover" not a "pump" pellet rifle and is pretty deadly.
