Gourds/rain/leaking

Been getting a lot of rain about every third day here in Kansas with good weather in between. Flooding, etc.. Made me wonder how much water gets into gourds from where they hang? I have Bo11+ gourds. I modified their holes to make them round and covered the gourd rod they slide onto with a small pie...

Re: Wind strength of Gemini

Thanks for the replies. I have not tried contacting Gemini. The picture is about as high as I normally keep it now that I have an existing colony. They don't mind. I lower it a little further when storms are predicted.

Wind strength of Gemini

Anyone know about how much wind a Gemini with 3" pole can withstand? Here in Kansas we get large storms rolling through frequently with 60 mph wind gusts. Sometimes stronger. I have a Gemini setup with 8 gourds on top and 8 gourds on bottom. I usually just have pole about 85% raised and when storms ...

Re: perches

I have Bo11 gourds with tunnels. I ordered some of the alternative porches from their site when I purchased these gourds and I'm on season 3 with no issues whatsoever.

Decent year considering the weather

Lowered my gourds and checked things out yesterday evening. I had 8 nests with about 5 eggs per nests. Season started very cold with late arrivals. Ended with 100 degree heat and high humidity. I have a Gemini rack with 16 Bo11+ gourds (gourd within a gourd). All babies but two fledged. I found a si...

Almost over

Just have a couple more nests almost ready to fledge, and we will be done here near Lawrence, KS. Hot weather and high humidity taking it's toll, but so far so good. Took me three years to start my colony. Just goes to show how close gourds/houses need to be to our actual house. Love having them aro...

Re: Heat and martins

They should be fine at 90 degrees. May just be sticking their heads out waiting for food or close to fledging. One or the other. We have had multiple days in the upper 90’s and so far so good. I do occasionally spray water up above my gourds so it falls down on top of them to cool off. No different ...

Gourd porches

Has anyone ever tried to install larger porches on their gourds? Gets pretty crowded one more than one fledgling tries to sneak out. Witnessed a few fall off this year. That would be an advantage of actual housing I suppose. Much longer porches. They don't make larger porches for gourds that I can t...

Re: Snakes!!!

That sucks! I'm fairly lucky because my rack is in a fenced in back yard and we have dogs. The Martins don't mind the dogs and we don't usually have an issue with snakes because of it. I just have to check for jumpers before letting dogs out.

Re: Heat and when to worry-I was wrong. My solution

Last two days here have had high temps at 99 and 98 degrees with heat index of above 105. I have Bo11P gourds with tunnels and vents. Decent winds helped today. I did have one jump yesterday and one today. The one yesterday fledged. One today jumped twice. Second time I believe because I put him in ...

Re: Baby stuck

He fledged about an hour later. Will see if the others can make it through the rest of today and tomorrow. Still upper 90's with humidity, but it's windier today.

Re: Heat Index

It's definitely tough to deal with. We/I can only do so much. Wife and I have full time jobs. I will check my rack as soon as I get home this afternoon for any issues. I am sure I will lose some. I have vents and shade and I mist the gourds a couple times when I get home. I can't do much else. I hav...

Re: Relentless Martin

I spend a fair amount of time outside with mine (if not at work), and I had one last year and I'm assuming the same one this year that acts very similar. Doesn't get super close to me but it definitely buzzes me. Had a couple jumpers yesterday that I had to place back in nests and he didn't bother m...

Re: Heat Index

Good questions on the ice and how to properly cover and place in neat. My guy/gal looked very close to fledging age. I’m guessing it was heat or an unsuccessful flight.

Re: Heat Index

Man this is rough. It’s so hot and humid. Saw a couple successfully fledge but have had two jumpers. They won’t eat anything. Have them in a 5 gallon bucket with to top covered with a light hand towel. Have them in my temperature regulated shop to cool off before putting them back in what seems to b...
