nest building

we had a asy pair show up on june 5' i'm guessing from some other colony, these were the first martins we have seen this year at our site. today they began nest building, after a lot of indecision by the female, she finally chose a horizontal troyer gourd and began picking up dry grass and taking it...

Re: sy pair in wi.

Correction, they are back this morning and it's an asy pair, I didn't get a good look yesterday. being this late in the season I would think this pair was displaced from a nearby colony for some reason, hoping they stay and start anew here!!

Everything but martins

We now have pretty much everything back here in wi. Lots of tree swallows, barn swallows, white crowned sparrows, orioles, indigo buntings, grosbeaks, goldfinches, but no martins. we've been playing the dawnsong, got decoys out, sparrows and starlings all killed, variety of housing available, no mar...

Snakes are not an issue here in wi. , however, raccoons can climb pretty much any type of pole, a gaurd for them is needed.

Re: Starling destroy's Conely II entrance!

I had a starling getting in my connely 2 entrance, it had built a nest and seemed to be getting in and out easily, she's dead now but i'm not sure the conelys are a good choice.

some good news in wisconsin

A big thank you to Bob Ring and other landlords who saw their birds through 2 ft. of snow and 40 mile an hour winds. Bob had 24 martins and one tree swallow at his colony in Sherwood today. All were eating crickets, mealworms and eggs, doing fine with no losses from the storm :!: :!: . If they can g...

The wi. purple martin assc. is recomending checking your housing for trapped martins, a pail of hot water poured on the winches should free them up, it is starting to thaw a little here near oskosh, good luck!!

Re: Hypothetical on returning Martins

Thank you Ed,that data should be an encouragement to those who are trying to start a colony, we are often told that sy birds are the only martins that start new colonies, personally, the three different times we had colonies start up here on our farm they were always started by asy males, hoping for...

Re: Hypothetical on returning Martins

Ed, correct me if my math is wrong but if 50% of asy martins die and only 30% of the fledglings survive, and only10% of those return to their native colony how can any colony grow?

Re: Owl

Hi Dave, it sounds like a great horned owl, my wife and i heard the same thing the other night , they are very common here in wi.I doubt he will be a problem until you have a colony large enough to draw attention, do you have decoys out?, he may hit the decoys and then you will know he is still arou...
