Re: In Warwick,RI - new to being a landlord - need help

My advice is read everything the pro's here say and it is a LOT. Im a wanna be and learning all the time. did the gourds get cleaned out from last year? Just thinking. Is there a bit of pine straw and leaves in there? put a bit of mud near the entrance and make it look used. Look at the placement, i...

Re: Dispatching European Sparrows

Nealbopper,
Difficult when the martins haven't arrived yet, but don't think about it, just do it. when the PM do come you'll do it anyway and if you stop now it could be worse. I like birds, don't want to kill any but I picture pecked eggs and dead martins. Im going for the male sparrows.

Only reason I did all that was to over stimulate their senses, read that here...go big or go home to attract them. Yeah, you have their interest. It'll come, you will be a landlord in no time.

Re: Newbie

Weird idea for you...maybe...it worked for me...here goes. The house we have is a Heath, I hung 4 gourds under it. I also put black tape over the unused holes to make them stand out, cut out black circles of tape and stuck it to the rear of the gourds and put three "tape holes" on the roof. wanted t...

Re: SREH anxiety is for real...

Im a start up newby, I have an older Heath that is converted to 6 large homes vs 12 and am at half capacity. I put the S&K SREH (has both round and crescent openings) over the original holes; 4 of the 6 have the round openings, the others have crescents and the ones who chose crescents have zero iss...

Re: Hopeful and cautiously optimistic! Plus a question..

Sounds like they like the place enough to fuss and then settle right back; then fight over the highest perches. They are too fun and trusting arent they? I used to want to go fishing on weekends, now Im content to watch martins.

Re: Thank God in Corpus!

Coolwhips, There are lots of martins down here heading your way Id bet; I walk a park during lunch and watch two colonies, each yard has two or three houses they are now completely full just last week. There are martins on the telephone wires looking for a home. Another pair and a single showed up h...

Re: Thank God in Corpus!

Thanks! Im on cloud 9; they stayed the night and this morning started nest building! Pieces of straw and leaves; both taking part. I saw the female take out one of the pieces of mud and drop it...i used it at the front of the hole. i almost cant believe it. I'll not be able to rest now. Talk about a...

Thank God in Corpus!

Came home around 445 to the usual expectation of an empty Martin House, told the wife exactly that but I always have to look...stepped into the yard and there was an ASY male and female occupying the uppermost deck, a SA male and female with another (couldnt tell sex) on the lower deck! Happy as cou...

Re: Newbie

Fellow Newbie! Wow, you attracted them fast; you have the right stuff. what Iv read here from the pro's (id suggest read it all) is that location is everything- sounds like you have a good location. Use SREH and eliminate any sparrows getting through. Its a commitment to those birds that pays off ev...

Re: Halftime in Texas--A Migration Report

John, That report came at a great time; I'm near Oso Bay in Corpus and while still a martin landlord wanna-be have been fascinated by these people tolerant birds; I just wonder why I didn't figure them out earlier! I walk a park in town during lunch and get to watch two colonies during the day, they...

Re: You know you're a PM Nut when.....

Very nice. I'm new at this but hooked. I find myself standing at the window staring up at the Martin house; willing them to come by. I was cutting the grass in the front and had a pair visit; dropped everything and sprinted to the back to watch...neighbors think i'm nuts. I'm a little.
