Re: PM outreach ops in the front yard

Whippy, thats funny! My wife too would say they are just birds. Now she knows the diffrence between males/females, some of their habbits and calls me in the morning to report the goings on. She went home on vacation in november for 2 weeks and left me all alone...strict rules not to get up to mischi...

Re: PM outreach ops in the front yard

Well, like anything else good with the bad. Personally, ill encourage it.as much as i can... like mud on the wall some will stick. Its my belief that some folks that are reached will form a real attachment to their martins and through that attachment will take measures they wouldnt have normally com...

PM outreach ops in the front yard

Well, the 8 gourds have sure atttacted attention! Martins: So far 3 pairs...as of yesterday. People: Have had folks drive up and stop to ask what the gourds are, they all seem very interested, open and curious. Gives me the opportunity to talk the birds up and build some martin-human awareness. I wa...

Re: Almost threw in the towel.

Duke, great news! Glad they returned, the Ll at west guth had late arrivals so i was hoping they were just delayed. Your lesson had me out and about checking the bases and area for ants, killed one nest in the middle of the yard. Liberally axle greased one of the poles, just have to watch. I think i...

Yep sounds like it, some sounds are distinctive...the female scratching out her nest bowl is distinctive. Scratching the mites is as well. Good looking out!

Big drama in natural gourd

Had a lot of new arrivals, must have been 20 martins try to come in tonight. Im offering natural gourds for the most part, a pair has taken up residence in a tunneled natural gourd, this gourd has a "horn" that curves out and parallel to the entrance, so it was turned on it side when it was being ma...

Re: Getting close to doubling colony size!

It is a challenge to count them, even at night, its over so fast! Exceedingly fun to try though. Those are good numbers, congrats. They are in good hands. Hope you fill up.

Big increase here

Two days of hard south wind paid off, started and held steady with 4 Asy males, grew to 6 last week, last 2 days grew to 11, two females staying the night. Some males have claimed multiple gourds so when the females come in they jump and dive into multiple cavities, fun to watch. Im especially happy...

Thats great! One less thing to worry about and your martins will be safer.
Id still shoot the starlings, they tend to try to dominate. Im glad it worked out!

Re: they are not staying

You did the right thing, the birds will figure it out. Sometimes its best not to watch. You will be relieved knowing the martins are safer. Soon they will barely touch the porch and zip right in.

Re: PM decoys

Funny, just this evening we had a new female come by, she went to a new gourd rack in the front after the resident males zipped in to their homes in the rear of the house. She flew right to a decoy i had up and stayed right next to it! Took her a bit to realize it wasnt responding, she flew to the o...

Unfortunately the martins learn the hard way. Last year we lost 3 or 4 to a sharpie, the martins were doing as they do, socialising and taking things slow. After the first few were lost there was a definite diffrence in their routines just as you described, straight in and straight out. I couldnt be...

Re: Research Project - Effects of Hurricanes on Purple Martin Populations

Sir, harvey made landfall August 25th.at 10pm. It slowed considerably before striking the coast. Roosts in the area historically stay until end of august, they aggregate into very big groups until they decide to leave. Looking at some of the historical roost reports here made by John barrow, they le...

Re: Research Project - Effects of Hurricanes on Purple Martin Populations

Hello from corpus christi, Our martin season here can extend well into the hurricane season, especially the younger martins and or displaced martins seeking a home. Hurricane Harvey came through just to the north of us...northern areas (rockport, port aransas and aransas pass for example) got hit ha...
