Re: Wet BO9 Gourds

I have several of the bone and they will leak if you don’t put the entrance covers on while you’re waiting for your Martin’s it will help a lot when you get your tunnels. And as for the holes at the top where the gourds hanging from You can put a little silicone around the rod that goes through it w...

Re: Timing

I have 4 rack up 1 S&K barn I’m sure it’s just like yours and I made the modifications to make the bigger rooms close of the attic area and Utilized it to put my bird magnet calling machine and it worked out great. The other three are bo9s and super gourds. I do have a bluebird trail I guess you’d c...

Re: Dawn Song or Daytime Chatter?

I have 2 of the bird magnets that play the Dawn Song. One is around 20 feet high in the eve of one of my dormers in the front of my house. Then one in the attic of a S&K barn style house that I have modified to just a 6 room house. I have both of them on a timer to come on from 4 to 8 am then 12 to ...

Re: While we wait

TNMartins I'm in the same boat the SAS shows martins around me but nothing at my site yet. I had 10 pair last year and several singles but nothing so far this year not even a glimpse of one flying over. The wait is frustrating makes you worry that they may not return at all. but I'll keep playing th...

Re: When is a colony established

So the older the birds the sooner they arrive to the colonies? Well I have only had nesting pairs for two years. Took 2 or 3 years just to see the first bird that started staying the night in the cavities. First nesting pair was 2018 and several others staying all night but not pairing up. Then my m...

Re: When is a colony established

Thanks Gary. I did have some young birds but 6 pair were adult birds the males were fully purple. But I hope they return soon this waiting for the Martins is worse than being a little kid waiting on Christmas. Thanks again.

When is a colony established

I had 10 pair last year and I’m just wondering how many pair do you have to have to be an established colony to where the percentage of chance that they will come back the next year is higher. The scout map is showing that colonies have returned all around me in the Knoxville area and surrounding co...

Re: Mirrors

Hobby lobby is where I got the mirrors. And the double sided tap doesn’t work well. I used gray Duct tape. I used duct tape and they have been in there for 2 years now.

Re: Mirrors

Hey Randy I use the small 3”x 3” mirrors in 3 gourds for the last couple years and they do seem to work. Had to cavities that had the mirrors in them that birds actually nested and fledged young in both of them. Can’t hurt give it a try.

Re: Multiple states two weeks ahead of schedule!

So you have trained them and they have become dependent on you now so they are seeking the food from instead of hunting it naturally.

Re: Multiple states two weeks ahead of schedule!

It’s amazing to me to believe these birds were not extinct thousand of years with no one here to feed them. How did they ever make it with out mans help before man intervened. God made the birds to be self sustaining from the beginning. They have only been trained by man to do this because we have t...

Re: cable ?

Thank you Brad and David. 7x7 is what I was looking at I’ll have to look a little further for the 7x19 I did see any on the site’s that I was searching. But thank you both again for your assistance. I hope to put them up this year if I can. But definitely if my numbers jump up again like last year. ...

Re: cable ?

I was just thinking extra rust prevention. But not so much now. Do you just put it on and leave it or do you spray it with some type of lubricant every now and then so it doesn’t kink up or anything like that.

Re: cable ?

The type I was looking for is coated stainless steel does that matter. Even if it coated but stainless steel underneath will it still rust.

Re: cable ?

Thank you PMdavid and yes that was a typo. It’s 1/8 in workload of 340lbs. And yes it will have troyer horizontal gourds and I would estimate the rack at less than 60lbs. So with your figures on the gourds being 36lbs that would put me just under 100lbs. That would leave me an overkill of 240lbs. Do...

cable ?

im working on putting up 4 new poles with gourds. The rack is made of 1/16 in stainless steel, 6 arms, gourd capacity of 24 on each rack. Would an 1/18 inch vinyl coated cable rope rated for 340 lbs be strong enough for these racks. Thanks in advance for all responses. JHCox

Re: Site fidelity

Thank you Sharon. I had a pair do almost the same thing last year. But with out banding there’s just no way of really knowing. I’m trying really hard to convince a gentleman here in East TN that is one of the very few in the world that is certified to band humming birds. If I can get him to do it I ...

Re: Multiple states two weeks ahead of schedule!

I know that most birds that are feed by humans just like animals will get humanized and will become dependent on this food over a period of time. So I tend to agree with Rafke77.

Site fidelity

My question is which one has the most site Fidelity the male or the female. Or do they both come back to the same site each year and pair back up. I’ve seen on here where people talk about the matriarchs coming back.
