Does anyone know at what age the babies generally open their eyes? my babies were 7 days old yesterday, and when i checked on them, they didn't have eyes open yet. thanks

Congrats!! i don't think you'll need to continue with the CD, but probably wouldn't hurt anything at lower background levels....

martins could investigate your site anytime yet this year until they head south. i would leave the housing up til then, good luck!

i agree with what others have said...pulling out the nest/nesting material will not yield any results, you must get more "serious"

yep, sounds like you have a pair that has begun to incubate the eggs. (you can confirm by seeing if you still have 5 eggs today)....which would mean they should hatch 15 days from yesterday! good luck and congrats..

Do male martins sit on eggs??

i know they can't "incubate" the eggs like the female can, but i have noticed that every time my female leaves the nest of eggs, the male immediately enters the cavity, and stays til she returns. is he sitting on eggs to try to maintain temp, or just guarding the eggs from predators??

i would leave the CD playing while you are gone...and you should continue playing it until you feel like you have at least one committed pair to your site. i have one pair that is laying eggs, and i still play the CD once or twice a week in hopes of attracting more martins...good luck!

i agree, i don't think you "spooked" any of your early martins at all....maybe they were just visiting or passing through...trapping sparrows, lowering houses, or even putting in a new pole would not be something that should affect the martins at all.....good luck with this pair!

WOW! congrats on your first year success! many people have to wait for years to attract martins (like me, LOL) you are very fortunate, and i believe Texas is a Martin rich environment. way to go, and keep up the good work!
