Re: Replacing with Wooden Martin Houses near rivers

My personal preference is ceder wood, a nice white painted ceder house to me looks fine, and will last a lifetime if taken care of...but just my preference !

Re: Now this is strange??

Yrs ago I used to have racing pigeons, they would sometimes land on on asphalt roofs to pick at the shingles grit, I would guess that is what is happening. It seems the SY males that don't have mates are being a real pane in the you know what right now.....mine are absolutely creating havoc right now.

I have 4 pair of ASY's that are doing fine, its the SY's that seem to be struggling a little with hatch rate.

flyin-lowe wrote:If it were me I would wait until after the babies hatch and when you plan a nest change. Build the new nests in the trays, lay the babies in them and then slide them in. Many people do nest changes during the season and there is not much (if any) of a disruption.

I agree with this

To repace a 10 day old nest with the used ready built nest , that the SY male built , both identical looking nest just one has no female . No blow fly larvae in the unused nest.

Nest Change Question

So while doing our 5 day nest checks I noticed that in one of the nest an SY male had built a very nice nest with leaves collected and all. Right below his cavity in a T-14 we have an ASY pair that has six babies in it...Has anyone ever swapped nests as part of the nest change....Would be real easy ...

Re: Thank you Chuck Abare

I've been hosting Martin's since 1990. My Dad had a site right on the Pee Dee River and he literally had thousands of Bird's. I have to agree that location does play an important part. I always had 10 or 12 Pair, but never at full capacity or what I would call a Real Colony. About 5 years ago my wi...

Re: Absolutly Crazy in Ohio

Congrats :). Great open flyway. Amazing how fast your colony grew. The only issue you may have are Starlings. They love to forage in fields. If it were me.....I'd add also a feeding station with egg shells, etc. I'd also suggest you limit your housing capacity to the amount of Martins you can care ...

Absolutly Crazy in Ohio

This has been quite the Ride for us here in Ohio, first of all it seems obvious that it is in the location of where you place your martin houses as we have virtually no trees at our current location, and since we had tried for 10 plus yrs. at our previous location which was virtually 2 miles down th...
