Re: PM’s still in the area

Susan, not sure if your brother opens his up several weeks after they are sighted at his site or in the general area. After they have successfully nested they will show site fidelity to that site and return the following year. Unless you are having problems with starlings, sparrows, tree swallows, b...

Re: PM’s still in the area

Just curious and should have asked earlier. Why do you think you should wait 4 weeks? If the martins are there your housing should be open.

Re: ASY nesting at a new colony?

That's great, instant colony. I think the advise that sy birds will start a new colony are inaccurate. I posed the question last year to landlords and it was 4 to 1 asy over sy bird starting their colony.

Re: Strange

You made me look, I have had no reason to nest check yet since I just noticed the start of nest building last weekend. I am happy to report no dead martins and indeed nest building has started. I got that snow as well, but I believe my martins were able to feed each day even on the snow day temps go...

Thanks for the reminder Ed. Very interesting and important information gained from banding. Wish someone in my area banded but no such luck.

Re: Hoping to be a new Landlord

Sounds very promising. I see pairs moving around to different nest cavities before finally choosing one. Hard to say if it's the same pair but nonetheless you are getting some good activity.

Re: shooting sparrow with shotgun?

On using the traps, if you let them start nesting and then insert the trap, does that work? I don't think the blast of a gun will scare them away. They will fly away when the gun sounds and then return shortly. That has been my experience. I have shot starlings setting right next to a martin with no...

Have you checked the scout arrival map to see if others in your area are slow to get birds back this year in comparison to previous years?

Re: I Haven't said much ....but!!!

Good stuff, if the new asy males decide to stay they shouldn't have any trouble finding a mate when the sy females make it back if they don't already have one by then.

Re: Starlings!

It will take them a little while to learn how to navigate them but they will figure it out. If you only had one pair last year I would be playing the dawn song, etc as if you are starting new. There is no way to know if your pair from last year survived their migratory trip.

I believe shooting or trapping is the only way, they need to be eliminated. Do not let them nest there, it will only do damage.

Re: Pecking

I assume what your seeing is the same as me, but it appears they are wiping there bill on one side and then the other on the perch. There are 3 theories, 1) is that they are cleaning their bill after eating, like using a napkin. 2) they are sharpening and shaping their bill for better food catching....

Re: Tips on attracting Martins to my house.....HELP

There is a dawnsong cd that the pmca sells that you can play on a boom box, etc if that works for your setup better. You don't need a glob of mud just put a little on and when it dries brush it off so that it still looks dirty (used). I would also suggest to close your martin house up and put one of...

Re: Tips on attracting Martins to my house.....HELP

I know jhcox has not had any sy birds arrive at his existing colony yet and he lives in Tennessee. I'm not sure what part of Tennessee he is in, but feel comfortable saying your not too late. Sounds like you have the open flyways you need, so are playing the dawnsong? I would have a decoy or two on ...

Re: 1st year....no martins.....too late now?

Jhcox is in Tennessee and is reporting that he hasn't had any sy birds arrive yet. You still have time, keep playing the dawnsong and try to make your housing look lived in. I think decoys help also.
