Re: My first pair....and....drama.......Virginia

Quite the battle you have been fighting Red and you have gained the upper ground. Keep it up and your efforts will be rewarded as it sounds very promising with the activity you're seeing. Hopefully you can get another pair or two to commit.

Re: Just Maybe!!!?

They definitely have some interest. You should stay out and watch your housing until dark to see if they come back and spend the night. That would be a real sign they have chosen your site.

Re: Newbie/Wannabe Landlord - Questions

Rusty, keep the dawn song going, that is your number 1 attractant to pull them in to have a look. Your predator guards can be diy if you can't purchase one specifically for your pole. The snake netting is just a bird netting which is fastened around the pole with a wire frame. I do think the cold we...

That's good that you were able to see how well it worked. Were the Martins in the area at the time?

Re: May white out!

Sorry to be politically incorrect, but if it meant my Martins would survive if I brought them inside in a box versus it were illegal because I didn't take them to a licensed rehabber, I would be bringing them inside in a box.

David, I have no experience with anything like that. Hopefully with both parents in the nest they can keep them warm enough to survive. Let us know how it goes down.

Re: Tenants in the Duracraft Castle

After one sy pair claimed a nest the Duracraft is becoming more accepted. As I had hoped the new sy birds coming in are giving it attention, with 3 pair spending the night last night and lots of activity on it this morning.

Re: How do I discourage Starlings

Alan, stay positive and keep playing dawn song to attract lookers. You have taken a major step in the right direction. You know Martins will accept your site and you have shut down the starlings. Those are 2 major hurdles. Good luck.

We've got the same thought process going Jh. My Duracraft will stay standing, even if it becomes an ornament.

Re: S&K barn 12 room modified to 6 large rooms

Jh, I had a trio castle last year and the birds refused to use it. Finally an asy pair took to it and nested, but dominated the entire house ( that's another story). This year i replaced it with a gourd rack and put it in the exact same hole I dug the castle out of. They accepted the new gourd rack ...

Re: Yet another new member with a question (or two)

John, lowering the gourds while the Martins are nesting will not affect them at all. Wait until mid afternoon when they are normally out and about anyway. By lowering your gourds while there are young in the nest you will be able to catch potential problems such as the mites you mentioned. Treat the...

Tenants in the Duracraft Castle

I can finally say there is an sy pair staying the night in my Duracraft Castle that I got from my mother. This year I completely took it apart and enlarged the nests, added porch dividers and gave it a full paint job. I also converted it to work with a trio castle winch set up. It originally mounted...

Re: Nest check 5/7/2020

Whippy, it might not be the location of the trio. The birds here at my house definitely prefer the gourds to my Duracraft castle. Now that I am getting several sy birds they are getting pushed over to it as I had hoped. Even they fight to get in the gourds before checking out the Duracraft.

Re: New House

On your house placement I would choose whichever space is the most open with flyways, but within close proximity of your house. I think pine needles in the nests is beneficial as it makes the houses look lived in, plus it gives them a headstart in building their nest. The number one attractant to dr...

I have a bluebird house 15 feet from my gourd rack and no problems. The bluebirds use the perches, but the martins and bluebirds ignore each other.

Re: Brand New and Learning - Home Question

Steve, the sparrows should be eliminated. You could be causing a bigger problem by just pulling the nest out. When they go looking for who did it, they might retaliate on your Martins.

Re: Brand new member and had a martin today.

Steve, congratulations that's great for your first year. The Martin nest building does not start right away after their return. You will see them carrying nesting materials to the house when they start building. Some people, including me add pine needles to give them a head start and a little warmth...
