Re: Southern Indiana - First Visitors

I would keep your decoys up unless you can tell they are negatively effecting the visiting Martins. It doesn't sound like they are bothered by them to me. Good to hear about all the visitors, be persistent even if none of these stay. You never know when your "colony starter" might show up.

Re: New houses

I was always afraid the Martins would come when I wasn't home to see them, so I raised my house and opened it up. I trapped and shot sparrows and starlings to keep them out. If it becomes to much to keep the unwanted birds out then close it up. Are you playing the dawn song? It really helps draw the...

Re: Purple Martins vs Drones

I am definitely not up to speed on the laws that govern the drones, but I thought in flying over someone's personal property there was a minimum height they had to fly at. I do know Martins are high flyers though. Good luck.

Re: Is it time to raise the gourds?

I don't see why not. Keep an eye on them to keep invasive species out. Lower them for storms, etc. as if you had Martins. Don't miss any possible opportunity to attract them.

Re: Dawn song questions

Don't give up playing the dawn song. It will attract Martins that are in the area anytime of the day. If they like what they see maybe they will make it home. Keep in mind the dawn song will not cause them to stay if they don't like your setup. If you have a sparrow problem you should be working tow...

Re: Reproduction

It is very entertaining to watch the males court the females trying to draw them back to the gourd or nest cavity that they have chosen. Right now I have more males than females , so the males are competing with each other for the attention of the females.

Re: New PM landlord - help choose placement

Looks to me like the red dot to the left gives you the most open flyways. How far is that from your house and the trees to the left?

Doug,
Good story with a great ending for sure. Can you go into more detail as to the different things and ways you go about getting a reluctant bird to take a cricket for the first time.

I would think racoon as well. I've seen them do some crazy things and would put nothing beyond their capability. There not called the masked bandit for nothing.

New Bird to the Colony?

First bird back to my colony was a female. Tonight she came back with a male. When she went into a gourd for the night, he could not figure out how to get in the SREH entrance. He would try leave aggravated only to come back trying multiple gourds numerous times. He eventually wiggled into the gourd...

Re: Louisiana-maybe a first pair

I have a young colony, so none show up real early. I do have an ASY female back but she doesn't hang around much. The others should be coming any day. They are a lot more fun after the group is here watching them interact.

Re: Louisiana-maybe a first pair

Sorry to hear about Hot Rod. Congrats on the 2 pair hanging in there. I tried for lots of years using the metal housing, moving them to different locations, etc.. I had decided I wasn't going to give up and I liked the look of the gourd racks. If no birds came, I would always have my gourds to look ...

Sorry, I'm not smart enough to add the picture or figure out how I downsized it before. :( The picture is in the thread HAWK on the third page. Maybe someone could move it to this thread for me???

Re: Pics of Decoy Mounting Ideas

I can't claim credit for the idea, but I did post a picture not that long ago. You can twist the spring up into the bottom of the decoy where the screw hole is underneath, then screw the other end of the spring to whatever your mounting it to. It will spring right back up after being hit by a hawk. ...

Gotcha, I think that will all work out. I also think Hot Rod will get the girl. Seriously, how long can a girl ignore a guy with a name like that.

Re: Louisiana-maybe a first pair

I have only had birds for a couple years now, so really can't say if that is normal or not. What I have seen is that the pair will go in the same gourd together every night. I have seen some go into different gourds as a couple as if they can't decide which one to chiose.
