A little bit of everything

Things are very active this morning. I have noticed a lot of sy birds coming in and that always causes a commotion. A second wave of nest building as some later arriving birds are building now. I used wheat straw to cover some grass seed I put down and they are taking full advantage of gathering it ...

Re: Getting them to Stay?

That's good news and sounds very promising. Keep doing the right things and be patient. Stay observant to what you see is helping and if anything is hindering your efforts and adjust as needed.

Re: No wonder!!! Definitely a rant!!

I think a lot of people have good luck with the s&k housing. How about hanging a couple gourds underneath and let the Martins decide which they like. They prefer the gourds at my site but others have reported the opposite. I have troyer vertical gourds with a tunnel and you can get a very inexpensiv...

Re: Sub adults and nesting

Sub adults are later returning than asy birds and are later nesting for that reason. They don't "pair up" as long as the asy birds because of their late return but I would not be concerned about not nesting after a week.

Re: No wonder!!! Definitely a rant!!

A scope and better rifle would help but if your not a shooter I would stick with trapping to get them. You mentioned a repeater trap so I assume you don't have a nest trap. Have you tried putting the nesting material in the repeater trap so it is easy for them to collect and rebuild? If you had a ne...

Re: Too late?

That's odd for them to start building a nest and then quit. Any insight into issues?

Re: Why the fighting?

Could be, but they will need to continue adding to that for their nest. They will use all kinds of different materials leaves, weed stems, straw, small twigs, maple seeds, etc.. They will make a small bowl in the back of the nest where they will lay their eggs. That being said I have seen material l...

Re: Still hoping for success!

Is it possible for you to turn it off when he is there and then back on when he leaves? Each bird might react differently so try some different things and see. I think it's best to play as much as you can without having that negative effect on him.

Re: Nest material carrying- is this a good sign?

Sounds like you have a pair. After pairing up and settling in for awhile, they will start bringing in nesting material just prior to laying eggs. The sy birds don't settle in as long as the asy birds because of their later arrival and the need to start the nesting season. Congratulations!

Re: Subadults in northern Illinois near Lake Michigan?

Stuart, don't wait for the subadults to open your housing. It is not uncommon for asy (after second year) birds to start a colony. If they are back in your area and you don't have issues with starlings and sparrows I would open them all up.
