Re: Small starlings

I agree with the trapping if you can't shoot. There are different types of traps for different cavities. There are also repeating traps separate from your Martin housing. Several different options.

Congratulations, that is great news. Now sit back and enjoy them for a bit before the next dellima arises. It's the landlord life. :)

I don't believe you scared them off with the cavities closed. They could have been from a neighboring colony just having a look. How many pair did you have last year?

Re: Are Everyone's Martins Doing OK During the Very Late Cold Snap?

Mine are doing well. Yesterday mid 40's with sun. It didn't reach 32 until mid to late morning, but they were out on the porches at 28 degrees. They were out yesterday afternoon feeding right above the water with tree swallows. Today is a little more sun, still mid to upper 40's with a brisk NW wind...

Re: Mirrors being used,

Sorry I don't have a picture, but stick a small makeup mirror on the back wall of the nest where you can see yourself when looking through the entrance hole. You can get them at dollar tree or dollar general very cheap.

Re: Might have messed up

I don't think you scared them off for good, they very well may have left for the night if unopened anyway. The best thing you did was to observe their reaction to what you did. Every bird is going to be different, so tinker with your approach and adjust to what you see. I have never played the dayti...

Re: Martins feeding

I have seen that as well in an open pasture near the housing. It is just like how a barn swallow would feed. I see it most when it is cooler and can only assume the bugs are not as plentiful up high. Also early morning or late evening when they are wanting to stay closer to home.

Re: 90 degree tunnels

I think the preference is more of the Martins at your site choosing the house style. I expanded the nest boxes on a Trio Castle , where when the bird went in they would make a left turn going into the expanded nest box. They wanted nothing to do with it and almost exclusively chose the gourds with t...

I had not witnessed any breaches on the Conley 2 entrance, but seen many starlings try to push their way in. This morning I seen a starling go into the Conley 2, but it's mate could not make it in. I think they are a good deterrent until they can be shot or trapped. My observation is that the vast m...

That's great. I think that's his sign he's looking down on you as well. You will always have good thoughts when you see the Martins return, knowing someone else is with you.

I don't remember the timing for sure. I do remember it was not when they first arrived. When I heard him it was right about dawn. I was sleeping with bedroom window open and awoke to him singing. Had to shake the cobwebs out to realize it was the dawn song.

Re: ASY male showed up today...

If he is staying the night, he will more than likely start bringing a female back with him and try and convince her to stay. I think he will continue to stay until he finds a female, it shouldn't be too hard for him to snag an sy for a mate. I didn't hear any males singing the dawn song until my thi...

Re: Newbie from NC

That sounda like typical behavior for the pair claiming your site. It is common for other birds to come back with them and not stay the first time. They might eventually stay the night or could be from a neighboring colony. Only time will tell. Your pair attracting sy birds is a good possibility as ...

I have a little movement with mine. I think it's the nature of the beast as the joints will have a little bit of play so they can slide over each other. There was a thread, not that long ago where someone had run bolts through the ground stake and first section. Then they welded the sections togethe...

If the sparrows are living in the house can you use a nest cavity trap? When they go into their nest they will be trapped one at a time. Be persistent and keep working the numbers down.
