Re: I think i'm getting close!!

That's great to here they are really checking the place out. Watch at dusk to see if come in to spend the night. The starlings will give up and move on, but on occasion one will be able to breach the entrance. If I see them and have the opportunity, I will shoot them even when I only have sreh open....

Re: STARTED OFF GREAT DAY!!!

Fun to watch and they can appear from nowhere!. I agree in due time the others will be back. An asy male is like a magnet and will most likely attract several more pair this year. Keep us updated.

Re: Repeating trap at work

Donnie, I see by your signature you have an going problem with tree swallows. Have you tried the tree swallow emergency protocal to deal with them? Several people have had success with it in getting the tree swallows to nest close by and not harass investigating martins.

Hmmm, that's interesting they are fighting here and go to the ground, but never to the extent you have witnessed. I have also seen them hanging from a entrance hole being held by another martin.

Re: Where’s the SY’s

JH, Based on when my first ASY showed up I think I'm another week away from the SY birds showing up. What was the date of your first ASY showing up? The general rule is 4 to 6 weeks.

Re: Repeating trap at work

Brent, yes I did. It's from the plans on the DIY plans from this site. NB Compact Trap is what it's called. It took a bit to get the balance correct but has been worth the effort.

Repeating trap at work

I've starting seeing starlings around looking to nest. I have sreh on my gourds but have Duracraft Castle with round holes and would like to leave it that way for sentimental reasons. I keep a close watch for sparrows and starlings, so they do not last long. This morning a starling landed to check o...

Re: A little late to the party!

Nice catch, I guess we know what's for dinner. I bet new asy birds moving into our colonies are more common than we realize. I have seen several come in this year and struggle at first to navigate the sreh and look a little lost at first.

Re: Pole Guard

Now that you have a pair, it's time. Do everything you can to protect and help them have a successful nesting season. That will assure that they return next year if they survive the trip South and back.

Very good read with a lot of interesting history. I hope you continue to promote the Purple Martin and there is not a better way than getting them in the public eye. I know you have helped a lot of people on this forum as well. Thanks

Yep, part of the process. He will probably work his way into one. Kinda funny how they go out and recruit them and then don't want them to have a nest.

Re: Early Dawn Activity

Right on, I hope they all stay. Instant colony if they do. The sy males will have a purple feather or two on their chest or up around their neck. Maybe even towards the tail. They will finish their chortle with a clicking noise that only the males will make.

Re: Year 2 still no martins

You said you are playing the dawnsong. I would alo suggest a decoy on or near your housing, prenest with pine needles and a little mud smeared at the openings. Just enough mud to make it look dirty. Martins want to be with other Martins and these things will make your housing look lived in and entic...

Re: Year 2 still no martins

I tryed for over 10 years before I was successful so 2 years may not seem too long. Good news is that you had some visitors and they're starting to learn where your housing is. It only takes one to decide it looks good enough to call home. I see you posted a good recipe. :) I was told that pictures ...

Good to hear your numbers are growing. Any way you can get a trap in your T-14 and do that sparrow in for good?
