Last year I trapped a male house sparrow in my gourd rack. Shortly after I raised 3 young martins. I tried getting martins at my farm for 27 years. A few came around each year but no luck. Two years ago I got permission to put gourds up on a farm 1 mile away. It has a pond near the gourd rack.Last year I raised 3 martins at this site. The pond seemed to help. Im still waiting for them to come bac...

I can see why some people don't feed martins .Theres time involved in it. A lot of people can't put that time into it.

tree swallows prefer high housing . They will normally go for that high gourd rack housing before occupying low blue bird boxes. Their a beautiful bird but very persistent.

Its hard to feed martins when your not around very long to see them arrive early. Living a mile away makes it difficult.

I see a lot of martins coming back into the teeth of this cold spell.Is some of this early returns do to people feeding them? Can you feed dried mealworms to martins for a first time feeding? Wet the mealworms a little so it feels bug natural :grin: . I here live mealworms won't last very long?

Thanks for the information on martins. Will 4 gourds be enough ? I don't won't to come up short on housing. I am hoping to expand next year if I get them again this year.

I had 3 martins fledge last year. Will tree swallows chase away these second year martins if they come back this year. I understand the adults won't be chased.I did catch and live release on tree swallows last year.If I do it now I could chase away martins. Whats the best approach now? :grin:
