They have arrived in Larimore, ND

Today is ... “the most wonderful day of the year!” As of 10:18 a.m., April 24, 2020, the Purple Martins arrived “home” in Larimore, ND I saw at least five ASY males and a couple ASY females, even more zoomed in right at dark. I was outside when I heard that unmistakable call. There is nothing else l...

Almost PM time in North Dakota

I’m in northeastern North Dakota. “My” Purple martins normally arrive here around April 23. They have been as early as April 10 and as late as May 7. Come rain, snow, sleet, hail, or gail force winds, I want the gourds all up and ready before April 15. Today we had it all - snow, sleet, weird soft p...

Re: Once again, adhesive confused.

I’m so sorry for the delay in getting back to this question. I thank all of you for the wonderful information. We’ve been busy getting my current gourds hung today. I try to always have them up by April 15. My PMs usually arrive by April 23. Once the temperatures warm up - it’s 23° F right now and h...

Once again, adhesive confused.

Greetings from North Dakota. I’m expecting “my” Martins back between April 15-30. I know I’ve asked before, and I appreciate all the answers, but I still have questions. I understand Lexel is a great adhesive. But which Lexel formula should I get? I have porches to add to gourds and I’m ready to mak...

Re: ? Cable diameter to re-string the winch ?

I want to thank each of you for responding.

I will be getting the new, smaller diameter cable, and a worm-gear winch soon and installing them this August after the 🤞 fledge!

? Which oil for braking winch ?

I’ve been reading older posts on winches - especially braking winches vs. worm gear. Now I realize I need to oil my old braking winch. I’ve granted DH a reprieve. “We” will be replacing the old winch and too-large cable at the end of August instead of tonight. For now, which type/brand/weight of oil...

? Cable diameter to re-string the winch ?

Even though last Thursday/Friday’s winter storm left 5”-8” of new snow here, April 15 is my “drop dead date” to have the 16 gourds hung. My martins usually arrive around April 23. They have been as early as April 14 and as late as May 7. I want to re-string the pole/winch/gourd rack before I hang th...

Larimore ND Nestcheck

My birds arrived at the end of April and have been busy ever since. My nest check today was amazing. I have 15 gourds offered, and all are full. There are 68 chicks, from pinkies to some maybe 18 days old, and two nests with theee eggs each being incubated. My flock is so “happy,” relaxed, and inter...

Purple Martins arrive in Larimore, ND

I have had an active Purple Martin colony since 2003. First while living on Grand Forks AFB and now here in Larimore, ND, about 25 miles west. My happy season begins! My first birds flew in last night about 8:10 p.m. This is the first year I’ve had only three birds show up as the first wave. “Normal...

Re: keeping house up

I live in North Dakota. I keep my gourds up until I think every bird in the northern range of Canada has fledged and passed through. I want their new fledges to see available housing. I also want them to have somewhere to stop for the night if they need to get dry and warm. ...Case in point... There...

Final 2017 fledging count from Larimore ND

My birds all fledged a few days ago here in Larimore, ND. I had 12 active pair of Purple Martins. They laid 65 eggs in 12 gourds 9 of the 65 eggs did not hatch. Four of these eggs had a partially developed embryos. The other five had nearly fully developed embryos. The female martin for this nest "d...

Re: Gourd rack question

I attracted my first colony with only three gourds. Hang in they're; they will find you! Granted, I live in an area rich with Purple Martins and very poor in housing and people interested in putting up any. Do you have a starling problem? If not, could you try hanging some gourds with round entries?...

Re: Crows eating martins

I've never seen them harassing my martins, but they wipe out robin chicks in no time. I have a "robin shelf/open nestbox" on the south side of the garage and under the shade of a huge maple tree. I kept hearing a commotion and walked around to see a huge crow clinging to the edge of the shelf, pluck...

Thank you, Ray. I appreciate the info and photo.

I'm going to check the guards again. I've hung the gourds but we can probably attach these while the gourd is still hung.

Owl Guards for Excluder Gourds; how to attach?

I have three wonderful Excluder Gourds, but I cannot figure out how to attach the curved metal owl guards made to go on them. Do I predrill a hole near the end of the guard, when it goes into the slots on the perch? Which bit, what angle, and where on the metal rod do I drill. If anyone has a photo ...

Purple Martins in Larimore, ND

The first Purple Martin for my 2017 season, an ASY male, came zooming into a gourd about 5:41 p.m. yesterday, April 29. Most of the gourds were taped shut to keep out the house sparrows. DH was home, so he quickly lowered the rack and opened all the gourds. This PM is a beauty. He must be one of "my...

Re: April 23, and it's snowing

Right now, it's not really working for me, either. But I think the never-ending winter just has me in a grumpy-gus mood.

Once a few flowers start coming up, and the martins are back, I'm hopefully I'll regain my steady composure - or not!

April 23, and it's snowing

I won't repeat what I said when I opened blinds this morning. Today is the "average return date" for my Purple Martins. There's no sign of them yet. They always get snowed on a few times whenever they happen to return, but seriously - could I just have a little Springtime? Mumble, grumble, whine, an...
