Re: Interesting behavoir of single pair

It is dark now. I found the errant one. Instead of entering the round hole gourd, it perched on the top porch of one of the gourds that has the two-porch-with-rods owl guards. There may be an advantage. An owl could trap it in a gourd. Where it is, it has several escape routes.

Re: Interesting behavoir of single pair

Success. Two fledged. This is the second night they brought them both home to roost. One has been able to enter the round hole gourd only after struggling 3 or 4 minutes. This makes me wonder how fledglings can manage a SREH entrance. The other one never would even land on a gourd. Both adults chase...

Re: New Bo Nine Plus Gourds

Whippy, You are making the right choices. You found the only link I know of that shows the BO Nine Plus gourds and they are on sale. They have a diameter of 9.25 inches and the Bo Eleven has a diameter of 11. The former only weighs 15 ounces. After 50 plus years providing martin housing I was lookin...

New Bo Nine Plus Gourds

Has anyone had success with The new Bo Nine Plus gourds. They are very light and have a black interior which I feel are good features.

Re: Interesting behavoir of single pair

Eggs hatched today for this single pair. The male has intensified his dive bomb runs on the decoy. He must feel threatened. :???:

Maybe a exit only flap. Some bright mind out there may work it out.

Rear and Front Entrances.

My martins seem so vulnerable when they roost at night in a one entrance compartment. I am wondering if any of the creative landlords have ever tried a double entrance. I saw a pair of martins nest in an old stop light at a busy intersection many years ago. The nest was built on the protruding cone ...

Interesting behavoir of single pair

A mature male arrived the first of June and eventually attracted a very immature female. He worked extremely hard for a few days. She sat on the perch for hours. He could not get her to stay at night so they roosted elsewhere. She did briefly check out his gourd a few times, for mating purposes I im...

Re: mosquitoes

Regarding mosquitos, I read about a study many years ago that indicated that martins at times do eat mosquitoes. There are times during the year when several types of insects are swarming due to leaving their nest at the same time, moving a nest or mating. Somehow the martins become aware of this ac...

Thanks. Good idea. It really is an easy fix once you become aware of the potential problem. I like the system and plan to add one more later.

Create A Rack Gourd Arms

Beware of the Create A Rack Gourd Arms advertised in the Purple Martin Conservation catalog. After a little wind, one end of the hanging hook holding one gourd was out of its hole. The gourd was hanging sideways with one hook engaged. Another gourd was stuck with the entrance hole facing down at 45 ...

Re: Arrival of Martins around Kinston NC

I have not put up gourds yet in Kinston. Thought you might like to know we set up 8 gourds last year in the Kinston Community Garden. We had one nesting pair. We are looking forward to growth there. I had martins for forty years in the Northwest Kinston area. Two years ago hawks devastated my colony...

Re: Behavior change

The arrival of adults from other colonies may have evolved to serve as a distraction, making it more difficult for hawks to prey on the inexperienced flyers.

Re: Hi

You have the passion. Now you need patients. My first pair arrived on the tenth year of trying. Then I enjoyed them for 40 years. Hawks brought the run to an end two years ago. I will try again this year with owl ( hawk) guards.

Re: Wing Entrapment Survey from PMCA

I need some feedback by someone who has some knowledge about the anatomy of adult martins. I am considering placing two slots on a SREH. I want them to be a pair of crescent slots (WESS, wing entrapment safety slots) designed to recapture some the loss space of the safer round hole. Hopefully, these...

Re: Martins Not Taking to New Bird House

Very creative. Generally I thinks martins like a little open area around the base of the pole. Also the house may be too close to your work area. Is there a building near by? Are there good flyways where they can fly down near the ground and then up?

Re: Wing entrapment idea.

Maybe carve out a little crescent at the place on each side where the round hole would be. Kinda recapturing the safety of the round entrance. I hope some researches this.

Wing entrapment idea.

I am wondering that if there was a rounded notch at the top of the entrance, modifying the SREH entrances, so that a struggling martin could slip the trapped elbow through, yet not make entrance easier for starlings. Maybe one at each corner.
