Re: Nighthawks

That's right, I looked them up and didn't realize that. Almost like the killdeer, laying it's eggs on the ground. I have a whole bunch of the kildees around here and the fools lay their eggs on my gravel road. They really like the very shallow areas of the pond on little mounds too. Endangered my a...

Re: How Great Horned And Barred Owls Find Purple Martin Colonies

Darn raptors (or whatever the claws of death from above are called) are no fun either.

Do lights in the general area help? I know they lights where they roost at. Mine had burned out and I will probably put them back up for next season. Security lights around buildings in the area.

Re: Forest fires in Brazil's Amazon rain forest

ALL of us PM fans are environmentalists. Some like me don't buy the MSM media environmental political agenda BS, but watch how many honeybees are on the clover we mow, how the birds and bugs come and go and form our own opinions. So I help the wildlife and I enjoy their presence. Here where I live t...

Re: Bank Swallows

So my place is a long strip of N/S grass with a pond or two on about the middle off to one side. I call it a grass airstrip, the birds call it a waystation. Sitting in the PU truck this evening with the dawgs at the north end of the strip for the sunset, I watched HUNDREDS (conservative est) of BS f...

Re: Forest fires in Brazil's Amazon rain forest

I am gonna apologize in advance for this redneck postulate, but what about the trade war with China and our ag products? 540 MILLION acres of rainforest destroyed and naturally fertilized by the burned tree residuals... These people don't play, nd they have a LOT of people tofeed. And BTW, supply wa...

Re: Bank Swallows

Edit: shallow end of the pond. BTW, why couldn't I edit my first post?

Eating larvae? Less fish predators (I have big fish) in the shallower water?

Bank Swallows

I still have hundreds swarming around the deep end of my pond this evening!!! Anybody here care about these birds and/or know someone who does? I would like to know more about them as theybare my last swallows in the season. Unfortunately they do not seem too concerned about bugs, but those are most...

Re: My Last Three August Late Purple Martin Broods Have Finally Fledged

My "anchor babies" fledged a couple days after I posted. All I get now are visitors passing thru.

Overall a good season and NO MORE death dangling porch gourds!

Re: My Last Three August Late Purple Martin Broods Have Finally Fledged

I have 4 racks up in pairs. The rack closer to my front porch still has little noses sticking out of one of the gourds! That pair attracts birds during the day so I suspect a roost in the area. The biggest problem is the bugs are gone except for large dragonflys. I do see a few hollowed out dragonfl...

Re: tree swallows

My tree swallow boxes are about 4'-5' above the ground. The TS compete with the Bluebirds and TS seem to win out. This year the TS fledged and cleared out rather early. Later in the summer I had hundreds of bank swallows hitting the shallow end of my pond in the mornings and evening. Swallow Hollow

Re: Here is my set up that has martins thriving in a small residential yard.

Did they populate both boxes or do they prefer one over the other? Those power lines are a plus, mine love them. I have a mating pair of redtail hawks in the woods at the rear of my place. Flying 1/2 mile for a little PM snack is nothing to them. I wish they would pick on the doves, or better yet th...

Re: A gang of martins?

Let me add this question... So at my place thee are maybe 250 birds in the civil twilight evening swirling around. I think all have fledged and maybe the older pro's are going for clutch #2. Where do the first round of fledglings hang out at night? Do they stay in the gourd they were raised in, hop...

Re: Maxed OUT!!

I suppose Brad and I are neighbors although I have never met him. We agree on our PM philosophy though and here the hands-off approach is working. I do have a predator hawk problem and with so many birds that seems to also be in balance. Around here the summertime is also when the grass grows, the p...

Congrats are in order I believe. Looks like you will have birds.

Did you pre-nest so they have a nice place to sleep?

Re: Maxed OUT!!

This doesn't have to be an expensive hobby. I make tee racks out of 3" PVC. 2 ea 10' sticks, cut 1' off one pole then cut the rest of it in half (2ea 4.5' pieces.) Put a tee fitting on. I buy 3' pieces of 3/8 dia 6061T6 aluminum from Aircraft Spruce, and drill a little hole on each end so I can put ...

So far no jumpers this year, but I now have a "rehab" gourd on the front porch which is where I would put one for the night.

I have put a gourd on my porch for problem birds

A couple nights ago I had a (teenage male??) bird on the porch right in front of the front door - at about darkset (when the skeeters get out) and I scooped it up and stroked it in my hand to soothe it. Poor thing has survived a hawk, cause the feathwers on it's neck have an amnomoly, maybe an attac...
