Re: Martins pair for season... or life?

Thanks for the replies, and my question probably is best addressed by actual banding studies. I got the dimorphism angle from a professor while working on my masters degree long ago. it seems to hold here with our geese who arrive each February with their last year brood tagging along. the pair fir...

Re: DIY winch system?

I tried to post a video of my first colony 2018 but I wasn't able. Might be my be because of my computer skills are not the best.
It's not your computer skills. I don't believe this forum supports video uploading. You can upload video to the PMCA Facebook Group though.

Re: worried newbe

If I pulled the correct photo this is a very nice area for martins. Nice long pond with open farmland to the south. Do you have much traffic on the main road?

Re: worried newbe

If you can post the area between the street and the woods is the place I hope to move the one in the back to. Hopefully a spot can be found to provide the best option. Are all four photos showing up for you? There is one showing the length of your driveway but the trees are obstructing where it con...

Re: worried newbe

You're very close to Lake Erie which draws a great number of martins. Do you know where the nearest colony to you is located? You are a bit far from the headquarters of the Portage Lakes Purple Martin Association in Akron but they may know of an experienced member nearby who would be willing to talk...

Posting aerial photos of property & surrounding area for white-out... Edit: Wow, this board is being very buggy today. Images show up in preview but not in post. Go in to edit and only the name of one photo shows up even though I posted four. I'll try again in a separate post but I may have to place...

Re: New at this’ help

In 2018, purple martins were reported in Huntsville, AL on 02/14. This year they were reported on 02/09. You can find arrival information at the following link — https://www.purplemartin.org/research/8/scout-arrival-study/. The older birds with established nesting sites arrive first followed by youn...

Re: Martins pair for season... or life?

I've been taught that as a rule, if a species exhibits sexual dimorphism (males looking different from females) they will mate for a season at most. but species with males and females looking the same (Canada geese, angelfish, etc.) tend to mate for life. I've not heard that rule before. Off the to...

Re: worried newbe

Thanks. I'll take a pic from the road tomorrow and maybe you can pick the best spot for both houses. Thanks again all!
An aerial shot of your property (using Google) may be helpful in determining the best location for your housing.

Thank you. Where did you buy it?
You're welcome. We picked up the feeder at Tractor Supply and the mounting supplies at Lowes in the electrical section. Menards also carries the same feeder under the brand name "Stokes".

Re: EFFECTS OF SUPPLEMENTAL CALCIUM ON THE GROWTH RATE OF AN INSECTIVOROUS BIRD: THE PURPLE MARTIN (Progne subis)

I have crushed oyster shells. Where can I put them for the birds. I remember a post suggesting to put eggshells and crushed oyster shells on the porches. Will that work? Or should I scatter them on the ground beneath the houses? The PMCA store sells feeding trays — https://www.purplemartin.org/shop...

Purple Martin Maps/Statistics

Point for those that aren't in the FaceBook group... Per Cornell, "eBird, a fellow project here at the Lab, just came out with a powerful new tool - a class of maps that show where North American birds are, and how they’re doing, at a finer scale than has ever been possible before. Not only can you ...

Good to hear he recovered. The dark-eyed juncos arrived here a week or two ago along with some red-breasted nuthatches. The nuthatches certainly are fearless little birds.

Yes, those ladders are nice but expensive. At one point we considered ordering a very tall podium ladder (so there is something to hold on to at the top). We gave up on our bat box. They must have abundant housing choices around here because they've never shown an interest.

I have the Trendsetter 26 that I put up in 2011. No problems at all.
Good to hear, Dave. Our pole is 20' and I'd prefer we not provide our neighbors with another impromptu Abbott-&-Costello performance.
