Purple Martin Maps/Statistics

Point for those that aren't in the FaceBook group... Per Cornell, "eBird, a fellow project here at the Lab, just came out with a powerful new tool - a class of maps that show where North American birds are, and how they’re doing, at a finer scale than has ever been possible before. Not only can you ...

Re: A Promising Start

Good to hear he recovered. The dark-eyed juncos arrived here a week or two ago along with some red-breasted nuthatches. The nuthatches certainly are fearless little birds.

Re: Trendsetter winch and pulley system

Yes, those ladders are nice but expensive. At one point we considered ordering a very tall podium ladder (so there is something to hold on to at the top). We gave up on our bat box. They must have abundant housing choices around here because they've never shown an interest.

I have the Trendsetter 26 that I put up in 2011. No problems at all.
Good to hear, Dave. Our pole is 20' and I'd prefer we not provide our neighbors with another impromptu Abbott-&-Costello performance.

Re: Trio floor & blank door

I no longer need a spare floor for the M12K Trio but could still use two blank doors. If anyone has two available, please let me know.
Two "perch rail supports" would also come in handy.
Thanks!

This is a very late response but did you contact a wildlife rehabilitation person about the junco?

Re: Bluebirds

Have read over the "tree swallow protocol" in case you encounter any problems? https://www.purplemartin.org/uploads/media/treeswallowemergency-377.pdf The bluebirds haven't caused problems though they occasionally roost in the gourds in late winter/early spring if we don't have the entrances blocked...

Re: New Trio Blank doors that are vented..

Yes, I have a bag of 2" and 1" vents that I bought online. The 1" have been installed over the open vent holes at the top of the Trio doors. I'm considering putting the 2" vents over the round entrance holes of some extra Trio doors I have. Then, when the weather gets too hot, I could switch them to...

Re: Hummingbird feeding into Fall info.

They're still moving through western KY (high today 57°f, low 41°f). RubyThroat.org is a good source of info for those of us in the east.

Re: New Trio Blank doors that are vented..

This is a great improvement for the blank Trio replacement doors, offering the martins more ventilation and landlords an easier way to open the doors! The upgraded doors are available now at; https://www.purplemartin.org/shop/product/trdb/blank-doors-for-trio-houses/ I was hoping for the louvered w...

Trio floor & blank door

I've modified a Trio M12K to have side entrances. I know I could use gourd tunnels/porches at the entrances but I'd prefer to keep the overall "Trio" look. I'm thinking I could use the outer perimeter (~19.25" x 5" section) of an old damaged Trio floor. That said, if anyone has a suitably sized port...

Re: New member from Wisconsin

Be sure shallow gourds (such as S&K Bo9 or Bo11) swing from side-to-side rather than front-to-back. You don't want eggs or nestlings to roll our during inclement weather.

Re: Hey Ray, Multi-House Question

Thank you for the info. We don't have storage space so our houses and gourds remain outside during the winter. I might look into a deck box for our gourds. I don't know why I'm just thinking of that.

Does the single bolt that holds the house to the wood ever work itself loose during bad storms?

Hey Ray, Multi-House Question

I ran across a post of yours from 2014 showing two Watersedge houses mounted to a dual hub on a single pole. I recently purchased a similar aluminum hub (6005T5 gauge 1/8" thick aluminum) and am trying to use it for two modified Trio M12Ks. Since I'm already out the money for this rack and I like to...

Re: Fulton Winch

No luck in the Facebook group. Fulton said 143001 would be the replacement for the K650s. It is rated for 1,000 lbs. They discontinued all brake winches rated for 600 lbs. I mentioned the Fulton K650 to a martin keeper and she said she had a K650 and it was a nice winch but it rusted after a few yea...
