Re: New Landlord

Hi Ryan, Actually what everyone else said is right on. I have several single bird’s that have not paired as of yet. So that is pretty much normal. I don’t know when Martin ‘s start building nests’ in Texas. Here in North Carolina they usually start building sometime in April, as I usually start my N...

Brad, So I take it that you can weld Aluminum...? That’s Cool. I can weld Aluminum also, but I can’t afford the Gun setup. Fortunately, I have 2 neighbors that can weld Aluminum so I get them to do it for me. I would love to see some pictures of it when you get it finished. I just designed and had b...

Hey Brad, This is True! There’s always a bright side of situations to look at. I can relate to your situation, but in time you’ll forget all about how hard it was to dig those holes. Just think about all the Martin’s that will be filling up those Racks where you’re digging those holes now. For sure ...

Hey Coolwhips, You got that right. This is Greeaat.!! I confess I do Love my Bird’s. Been waiting all year just for this. When I can go out and see some Bird’s. Not just 1 or 2 but a whole bunch of Bird’s - So many I can’t count them.! That’s what i like.! Bird’s, Bird’s, and more Bird’s, that’s wha...

Re: Gemini Gourd Rack Photos And A Short Update

TerryW, Good for you Terry. Yes Steve has a super Great Colony with all his Bird’s, and he is a super Landlord and very knowledgeable when it come to Martin’s. And to think he offers all “Round Holes”. I would truly like to offer even some Round Holes, but I know that would be like a dinner bell rin...

Bird’s, Bird’s, and more Bird’s...!

I’ve experienced a complete new wave of Bird’s (Martin’s) this day. Not sure if I doubled in quantity but for sure have come close. Every Pole System that I have has several Pair of Martin’s claiming their perspective Gourd’s. Before I was holding at 20 - 25 Bird’s. Now I would have to say that numb...

Re: Once again, adhesive confused.

Caroline, Basically everything all these folks have said is true and accurate. I use the white Lexel when modifying my “White Gourd’s”. However, I do like to use a stainless steel application in the form of nuts and bolts if necessary. Sometimes you have to use a piece of Aluminum bent at a 90* angl...

Re: Winch Question

That’s Great, sounds like you have it pretty much going on. It has been a very wet Spring everywhere. If all your going to have is one rack, the rope set up might be o.k.. I been keeping these Bird’s for 31 years now and back in 1990 I built 2 Steel Racks with 2” x 2” Steel Poles. Back then I Bolted...

Re: Gemini Gourd Rack Photos And A Short Update

Hey Steve, As always Great photo’s of your Gemini Racks and Martin’s. Certainly wish I could use round holed Gourd’s. If it wasn’t for the Starling infestation I have around here, I would have several if not all round holed Gourd’s. However, I do my best to to keep the Starling numbers down mostly w...

Re: Winch Question

The Smiths, I have 7 Pole Systems and all of them have Dutton-Lainson 2000 lb. Worm Gear Winches. Which are in essence a true Brake Winch. You just use a hand held drill with a 5/8” socket to raise and lower your Rack. Up or down it doesn’t matter, when you stop it stops. Very smooth and easy, no je...

Hi Mike, Wow - 1296 cavities is a tremendous amount of units for Nesting. Wow, a lot of cavities means a lot of Bird’s. How many Bird’s did you have last year? How many Pole systems do you have.? Do you do Nest Checks, and if so how long does it take you to complete.? I’ll have 7 complete Pole Syste...

Hey T-Bird, The advise everyone has given you is right on.! I have a Repeater Trap for Starlings and one for Sparrows. I keep a 5 gallon bucket close by the traps and just drown the little rats when I catch one. I used to pull their heads off, but that got a little messy on a few occasions so now I ...

Hey James, That is Great that you have spotted your first Martin for the 2020 season. I kept watching under NC Scout reports wondering when you were gonna add your name. They’ll start to flow in on a regular bases now. I have about 25 I think. It’s hard to see all of them going in and out of Gourd’s...

Hey Brad, You got that right.! Farm life is the Best by far. I Love it here on the farm. Wouldn’t trade it for anything. Sounds like you have a Great site that the Martin’s really like. Wow, 35 Bird’s is a lot .! I’m holding at about 20 so far, but with these southerly winds it should bring in a lot...

Re: New gourd rack placement

Bschutz, I don’t believe that there’s a concrete rule as to how far apart you need to place your pole systems. Like flyin-lowe said just make it so you can mow easily around your poles and that you can access your individual gourd’s. I have 7 systems and they’re all 15 feet apart. I don’t think your...

Yes I have both as well. I play the Dawn Song in the morning from 4:00 a.m. to 6:00 a.m. and the daytime chatter from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. My daughter and Grand kids gave me an ION Explorer Extreme Bluetooth Speaker. And my son in law programed it to a continuous loop 24 hour MP3 player. So it pla...

Re: Fight to the death of both

Mike,

Fights can become rather rough at times. Glad to hear you got them apart and they flew off.! Just curious you said you had to get a ladder to check on them. Do you not have a winch to where you can lower and raise your rack.?
