Re: My Purple Martins Obviously Like Gourds!

I agree with everyone on the fact that my Martins like Gourds better than houses. My Dad had hundreds of Gourds and never had any houses, and he had hundreds of Martins every year. I too started out with Gourds and houses but it was plain to see the birds liked the Gourds better. I agree with Steve ...

Re: Strengthening Pole

Hey Rob, It’s been 2 or 3 years ago since I reinforced that pole, and it has made all the difference in the world. It’s just like it grew there. Can you weld Aluminum or know someone who can.? I can weld Aluminum and Steel, but I can’t afford the Aluminum set up. Fortunately I have a neighbor who ha...

Re: Gourd Racks And Houses Lowered And It’s Cleaning Time

Hey Steve, My daughter Lisa is trying to help me post some photos. We’re having trouble trying to get on the profile page.? I wanted to show you some photos of my new Nitro D gourd rack and my Winch/Pole systems. I have some Excluder and deep Natural Gourds, but have never used them thinking the bir...

Re: Gourd Racks And Houses Lowered And It’s Cleaning Time

Hey! I’m Rodger’s daughter and I’m trying to help him post some of his photos on this forum and we have tried everything and can’t figure out what we are doing wrong. We are on an iPad so could you explain how to do it? I went to “new post” and put in a new topic then he typed what he wanted to say ...

Re: Gourd Racks And Houses Lowered And It’s Cleaning Time

Hey Steve , I can see were the natural Gourd like you’ve shown in your photos would probably work. Especially since you explained about how the birds can climb so well. Ditto on my that.! I can’t seem to grasp the concept of how they can scale the walls of a Super Gourd or an Excluder Gourd. On Gour...

Re: Gourd Racks And Houses Lowered And It’s Cleaning Time

Hey Steve, Just curious do the birds readily accept a house that has a 6 inch floor drop? Can they get out of the house without to much trouble? Most all my Gourds don’t have that much fall. And even the Troyer Horizontals have rubber tread walk ramps. I too modify my THG’s with vent ports at the up...

Re: Strengthening Pole

Hey Rob, I did just that on one of my 2” Poles. Drilled some holes in the middle of the pole, then welded both halves flush together. I use a pole anchor at the base of all my Poles. 2 - 3/8 x 3’’ flat steel concreted in the ground 36” with 30’’ sticking out the top. I then drill two 5/8” holes thro...

Re: Better storage of my gourds

You got it looking good.
I built a 3’ x 3’ x 8’ box that mounts on the front forks of my tractor. Then I simply transport them to my metal shop. Used to transport them in several trips in my UTV. This new way really saves time. Plus only have to handle them 1 time instead of 4.

Re: Gourd Racks And Houses Lowered And It’s Cleaning Time

Steve, That will be great when you get your building for your gourds. Where do you store your gourds now? I stored mine in a storage building I built some years ago. Now with my transport box, I’m hoping to make the moving part happen quicker. I do like the BO-11 gourds from S&K as long as they’re m...

Re: Gourd Racks And Houses Lowered And It’s Cleaning Time

Hey Steve, So sorry I haven’t gotten back to you before now. Have been so busy. We have 13 grandchildren and they are always wanting us to come watch them play their individual sports. Needless to say we stay on the go. I’m sure you will like it when you get your new building to winter your Gourds i...

Re: Gourd Racks And Houses Lowered And It’s Cleaning Time

Looking good Steve. My grandson came and helped me 2 or 3 weeks ago to take my gourds down wash them out and dip in a 9 to 1 Bleach solution. He was a lot of help and it still took us 2 complete days to accomplish the task at hand. When the gourds have all been cleaned and dried I place them in a 3’...

Re: Think I have decided to build another T14

It was 2014 when I installed my first Worm Gear Winches. E-trailer had one a Model DL 11011 for $80.95. Dutton - Lainson had what looked like the same winch Model DL 11011 with Hex Drive rated at 2000lbs. For $85.95. Dutton - Lainson also had another Model WG -1500, rated at 1500lbs. For $80.95. My ...

Re: Found Male ASY martin dead in gourd.

More than likely Jason, It was a Starling. They have a long strong beak and will use it to attack a Martin especially if they can corner one in a Gourd or Cavity. I’ve had the same thing happen to my Martin’s with their eyes pecked out and heads pecked bald. Sparrows a smaller and weaker bird usuall...

Re: Think I have decided to build another T14

Yeah, I don’t think you’ll be disapointed in the Worm Gear Winch. It is in itself a Brake Winch. It activates when you stop or start pulling the trigger on the Drill. I’ll have seven (7) when I get my T-14 installed. Wouldn’t think of having anything else. The ease and convenience makes it superior ...

Re: New PM landlord - help choose placement

Sometimes you must do what you really don’t want to do. I know for me I had to take down a couple beautiful trees to open my site up. I did not want to remove the trees but decided it was the Martin’s or the trees. After the trees came down I was amazed at how much difference it made. Seemed like th...

Re: Think I have decided to build another T14

Hey flyin-Lowe, Photos of your T-14’s and your site look great.! You got it going on.! How many cavities do you have for your bird’s.? Just a suggestion, a Worm Gear winch would work better for you than that cranking one. Then you would be able to raise and lower with a Hand Drill. Andrew Troyer has...

That’s o.k. NewbernD, You’ll learn all the different terminology in time. I tend to agree with Dean the red dot to the left does seem to offer better flight paths. Good Luck, Rodger P.S. Sparrows and Starlings will peck and break your Martin eggs and kill your babies, then build their own nest right...
