Re: Cold weather behavior

I add pine needles anytime I feel that the nest are inadequate throughout the season. Especially when the SY purple martins arrive and build only scant nests. The ASY pairs and especially the ASY females have more experience and build better nests. Pre-nest whenever you can including now. I know tha...

Missouri Purple Martins

deancamp, I would assume that Missouri is divided with eastern 2/3 of the Missouri purple martins primarily migrating up the Mississippi Flyway and the western 1/3 of Missouri purple martins migrating up the Texas Flyway. Of course, that is pure speculation and geographic topography will also affect...

Cold weather behavior

Joe, I would like to know what kind of housing you provide for your purple martins. Aluminum and plastic housing will not retain heat in the compartments compared to wood. Not saying that explains the behavior. I would assume that the males are just hanging out until it warms up. Too darn cold (40s)...

Re: Pellet guns...What do you own or recommend?

Also to be noted is, do not shoot BB's from an air rifle if you want to maintain accuracy as the steel BB's will ruin the barrel rifling for accurate pellet shooting. I studied the Daisy 901 ads on Amazon and was dumbfounded to see that a "Daisy Outdoors Products 901 Kit" is available for the Daisy...

Air Rifles...What do you own or recommend?

I agree with the options available now. Several years back the availability of air rifles from low end to high end was limited. Now not only are there turn key options in low end to high end air rifles but there are upgrades and accessories available over the whole spectrum. No longer do people have...

Air Rifles

T-Bird, As you know the multi-pump air rifles give you choices with each shot. You can use a light pellet with fewer pumps for a shot at a closer range HOSP and a heavy pellet with maximum pumps for a shot at a farther range EUST. Because your Trendsetter 12 is equipped with SREH you will probably n...

The winds are favorable for Texas but...

Dr. Janice, my sister in Seguin, TX, saw and took pictures of an ASY-M and ASY-F as her first 2020 martin sighting today. But her colony is only 1/4 mile from Tony Frederickson's super colony. She is not worried because lowest temperature are 34 for Wed. and 38 for Thurs. and her colony is so open t...

Air Rifles

T-Bird, So many factors it is hard to discuss on Forum. Will you be eventually setting up a Sheridan "Blue Streak" with a Williams peep sight or scope or are you good enough with the original front and rear sight. I am planning on a "One Piece Scope Mount for Sheridan F and C, Blue & Silver Streak" ...

Re: Pellet guns...What do you own or recommend?

I have the book, "Know Your Sheridan Rifles & Pistols; 2nd Edition" by Ronald E. Elbe and can answer your questions better with some information especially if it is about a specific Sheridan "Blue Streak". Serial numbers are present on Sheridans from 1972 onward. 1972-1977 Sheridan "Blue and Silver ...

Thicker entrance for enchancing SREH effectiveness

If you are going to make a half arc of PVC pipe to put inside of a crescent entrance to reduce wing entrapment, would you use a 3" inside diameter PVC pipe since the basis of a crescent is a 3" circle? How does a 1" thick half arc of a 2" inside diameter PVC pipe would work? I would like to see a pi...

Trio Wade Martin House Winch Cable

Those are excellent pictures to let everyone know that a 3/32" stainless steel 7x7 wire rope will work with any Trio Winch. You are definitely equipped with the right tool for crimping. Glad you have your colony ready for the purple martins because they are headed your way on the map of the 2020 Sco...

Trio Wade Martin House - Remodeled in New Location

Yes, there are vacancies in the Remodeled to Modern Standard and Up to Date Purple Martin Construction Codes in new Plano, TX Location. Trio-Wade TW-12 House Modified to 6 Expanded Compartments

That Trio-Wade house looks great in your backyard.
Between the gourd rack and the Trio house, you have a good selection of housing for the purple martins.
A purple martin was sighted in Yantis, TX yesterday, 1/25/2020!

Will BBs work on Non-Native, Invasive Birds?

T-Bird, Conrad Baker presents the best way to determine if BBs are accurate enough at 20 yds with your Benjamin 310 BB air rifle. His test to compare BBs vs. Pellets is concise and to the point. The results would be very useful to many landlords. There are many landlords who start with a BB gun to s...

Copper coated lead BBs vs. Steel BBs

If you shot a BB gun of any variety as a youngster, you were taught or learned not to shoot steel BBs at a hard target such as a tin can (thin steel coated with tin). The steel BB can ricochet back at you if you hit it just right and stand too close to the target. A soft target like a modern thin al...

BBs vs Pellets in Air Rifle

T-Bird, You can shoot pellets in a smoothbore air rifle, but I am not sure that any benefit will occur. Without the rifling to spin the pellet I don't think the pellet will travel any truer than a lead or steel BB. Do NOT shoot steel BBs in a rifled .177 barrel. The steel BB will erode the rifling i...
