Re: No Sparrows

Do your gourds have tunnels? I have seen sparrows look in, then fly away. My gourds have been up since the first of March. Seems strange to me but .... still no sparrow nests.

No Sparrows

I thought I would share my experience with my new setup. I had a T14 and was cleaning out HS nests every other day. In early spring I gave the T14 to my brother and I ordered 14 BO11's and made my own 'rack' so I could still use my wood pole. The BOs have the availabe tunnel with crescent openings. ...

Almost excited.

I have been trying since 2013. Finally this year there is interest. In the past week we have had several visits (same birds? Don't know) but none staying. They go and come back several times during the day. Few questions: 1). Should I turn the Dawn Song off when they are in the vicinity? 2). This ye...

One Last Question

When trying to attract martins for the first time...... Are you more likely to be successful the more cavities you have. In other words: is twenty better than six ??

Re: Housing Location / Question

If I put a new rack on the dock I will invent a method so I can rotate the whole rack. I know I don't have the best setup to attract Martins but I still want to try.

Re: Housing Location / Question

Thanks for the advice. I do have a predator guard. I will install if/when I get martins. The birds have 3 good open airways. The tall trees seen in the pics are 300+ feet away. I'm not moving my existing setup. I am considering adding another pole & BO11P with tunnels & Cooling Caps. I play the Dawn...

Housing Location / Question

I have been trying to get martins for 5 years..... I am considering putting up another 6-8 gourds. I want to attach the pole to the dock at my pond (see pics). Is this a good idea or a bad one ? I want to put the pole at the RED X in the last picture. The dock is used only for feeding the fish in th...

Round vs Crescent

I have been trying for four years....no luck thus far.
I just changed from a T14 to new S&K BO11 with tunnels and crescent entrances.
Question: Am I just as likely to attract new martins with this set up or should I have some round hole gourds?

Thanks in advance for any responses...

Housing Preparation

when preparing for a new season is it best to put nesting material in the cavity or leave it bare? I've seen one Martin and he was only on the house for 2-3 seconds and he was gone! Any clues as to why?

Louise, thanks. That makes sense. Can you tell that I didn't get any Martins this my first year of trying?

Babies

My brother has 10-12 babies for the first time. We lowered the T14 to check on them. All seemed lifeless but all were alive. Is this normal ? The are at least two weeks old. Temperature in the low 80's.

Your thoughts?

Thanks, Dick

I can't believe it...... Last night i ordered a CO2 Hammerli 850 with scope. - $ 400.00

I have a cheap pellet gun. Have shot at many birds and hit only one. At 60 feet a sparrow is a very small target tough to hit even with an accurate rifle and almost impossible with a cheap gun.

Good luck

Basic Math & Logic

Question #1: Which is greater - the number of Martins or the number of man-made cavities? If the answer to the above is martins (which I suspect is the correct answer) then : Question #2: Where do the "unhoused" birds nest and why do cavities go unused (that eventually are used)? I have nothing bett...

Dawnsong Question

I am a wannabe landlord. I am playing the dawnsong from 4AM to 8PM. I have yet to even see a martin.

Once I have a visitor when should I stop the dawnsong? When should I start it again, if ever?

Thanks

Mitch, I would have to dismantle my house to show you. The cable connection is hidden. Not all T14's are made the same. If you send me a private message with your phone number I would be happy to give you a call and explain my set-up.
