Re: Just A Little Update (Lots of Martins)

Kyler, It sounds like you are off to a good year. Now that spring/summer seems to finally be here our birds should have no shortage of insects. The late April blizzard had me nervous. I counted about 30 birds last night and more seem to arrive each day. I have a used metal Trio house given to me tha...

Plant fiber entanglement - need help!

I now have a second martin flying about with fine plant fibers (4-5") wrapped around the tarsus. I had previously added pine needles to all trays weeks ago and this is new material they are gathering and bringing to the nest. This bird is spending a lot of time at the T-14 but I don't know if a spec...

Re: Dispatching European Sparrows

Think of it this way, would gardener or farmer allow the weeds to take over his garden or field? The sparrows are non-native and an invasive species, and it was ignorance and stupidity that brought them here in the first place. Martins are not the only native species having to compete with House Spa...

Wood nest tray "bowl" question

Since becoming a martin landlord in 2012 I have made all of my nesting trays for T-14, Cedar Suite, etc. They are of flat surface cedar board 6" x 12" with metal sides. Invariably the birds form the nest bowl at the extreme rear of the tray. Question: For those who have purchased the factory trays w...

Amazingly tough, Kansas birds; anxiety over

Kansas is famous for nasty, violent weather. On a pleasant evening a week ago while sitting in the yard, I estimated 25-30 martins at my housing. Last Friday (Apr. 28) the morning and early afternoon was warm but by late afternoon all hell broke loose. We experienced the latest blizzard in decades. ...

Merlin, of course. It is a falcon and protected. All raptors are protected by law in U.S. and Canada.

Re: getting rid of hawk?

I would caution anyone to not shoot (shotgun especially) in the direction of a hawk or owl as all raptors are protected by federal law. To injure or kill a raptor will result in a big fine if caught.

Re: DebA on the scout report! Kansas

I have four birds today (3M, 1F). I am hoping for more nesting pairs this season (32 nests 2016) with a 6 gourd rack added this week.

Re: New Kansas Housing Question

Thank you Michael and Ravens for your input and I will take your advice.I feel very fortunate to be able to attract martins out here near the western edge of their range (SW Kansas), and I wish you both the best in 2017 and your efforts to attract martins!

New Kansas Housing Question

This spring I plan to add two additional housings options (metal Trio and gourd rack) to my yard where I've offered two T-14's these past four years (25 successful nests in 2016). The new poles/housing will be approximately 20' from the existing T-14 poles. I will put out the T-14's in Mid March. Sh...

Southwest Kansas Season 2016

It was a productive martin season for us despite an equipment malfunction mid-season. Around July 1st the cable detached from a 15 apts. combination metal and wood houses. Fortunately I was in the garage at the time when I heard the loud "bang." The entire set was sitting on the steel cable winch an...

Re: Help please: Desparate for Info about flying squirrels

Can you place a plastic sheet at the pole base with some fresh mud to see if any raccoon tracks appear next morning? A lot cheaper than a critter-cam.

Metal house replacement parts needed

I was recently given a long neglected Trio Mini Castle with several triangular floors missing. Is there a source for replacement parts for this model? From the Trio company perhaps?

Re: Weather question

We have had cold, wet weather here in southwest Kansas for the past three/four days. My 16-20 martins were present before this miserable cold front parked on top of us. Last night a light frost on the windshield. Yesterday I witnessed many birds huddled on the downwind sides of the housing. Today we...

Martins on the Edge (nestlings still)

As of yesterday (July 29) I have one nest remaining with three young about 3/4 grown. I estimate fledging perhaps a week away. It has been a successful season for me with early summer rains breaking the drought somewhat and milder temperatures than past recent summers. Of 32 apartments offered (wood...

Martins on the Edge (Westernmost colony?)

I am on the High Plains just 50 miles east of the Colorado state line at Holcomb, in Finney CO. Kansas. Am I the westernmost landlord posting on the PMCA Forum? Also I don't know if I get the eastern subspecies or the Rocky Mtn. race. Any input appreciated.

Friday afternoon I placed poached eggs on the porches (thanks Deb for your helpful suggestion) during a lull in the nasty weather. Five martins flew from the T-14 apartments as I lowered the unit. I saw one bird return within 20 minutes. The weather this Saturday morning is not helpful as another fr...

Here in southwest Kansas (where the wind never stops) I am worried. Last Sunday I had five nests with eggs. The past three days have been nasty and today just as bad. Last Sunday I estimated 16-18 martins between the two wood houses (25 apts). The last few days as few as maybe six have been around. ...

I have two Super Gourds and could not get the birds interested until this year when I installed porches. The porches are homemade of sheet metal and a 3x3" square of asphalt shingle glued on the porch for grip and traction. I also sprayed painted the insides dark brown. I think they are bringing in ...
