Re: eastern bluebirds aggressively repel house sparrows

I haven't seen them aggressive towards HOSP, BUT the male Blue sure does go after the Red-Headed Woodpecker. One visits the feeder which is about 50 ft away from the BB house and when it lands to feed, boy the Blue bird goes after it and chases it off with a vengeance!

Porches on Excluder Gourds

Do we have to raise the porch up to 1/8 inch on the Excluder II as we do on the Modified Excluders? I did so on the two the I have however none of the Martins are using these two gourds. I'm concerned it's too close to the entrance and they aren't able to get in? I see them peeking in the entrance b...

Rough day

Today hasn't been a good day for me. First thing this morning we had to send our pug to doggie heaven and just now I had to do a purple Martin burial. First one to be lost to the weather. Female. So now only five are left. I'm not sure how much longer they can endure. I've placed mealworms at the en...

Tim,
Great job! Question for you, what is the raised thing in front of the entrance? And what purpose does it serve?

Thanks!

I had six gourds last season and they all had No-Rockers on them. For me personally it puts my mind at ease not having them rock. This season, I added six more gourds, three of which are Troyer Horizonatal and as I sit typing this, a strong burst of wind is occurring and I can see them rocking.

Thanks for the recommendations. I'm still debating about the gourds. I like them but will have twelve for next season. Not sure about another rack of gourds.

Anthony please post pics. I'm not familiar with the houses you speak of.

Thanks!

Looking ahead to 2015 Season- recommendations please

Now that all my martins have fledged and they will be leaving soon, I'm starting to prepare for next season. One of the houses I have is a S & K Plastic house that has seen its last season. I'm starting to shop for a new one for next season. I wanted a trendsetter but had no idea they are so expensi...

Thanks Louise. I don't think it is going to make it. He seems to slowly be declining. I've been able to get it to take about 3 meal worms but that is it. I spoke with Penny and she advised that the Martins will either kick it out of the nest or it will try and leave the nest because it's afraid of t...

I spoke with a rehabber and she said I could put it in with the Martins but the only concern is they have two different migration patterns. I'm not sure what to do at this point. I am about 2 hours away from the rehabber.

I guess my main concern is if I add the swallow to the Martin nest, will it harm the Martins?

They do eat mostly flying insects. I'm trying to find an age identification because it is fully feathered but can't fly. I tried feeding a meal worm but wouldn't take it. Here is a pic.

Cliff Swallow - Help Please

I found a baby albino cliff swallow today. It was on the ground about to be eaten by a crow. I'm not sure how old it is, but it has full feathers. My neighbor has a gourd with 4 baby martin about the same size as this swallow. Should I place it in with the Martins? I'm not sure what to do - any and ...

Last of the Martins and Numbers

Well I'm down to my last 6 babies needing to fledge. I can't believe how quickly the season has gone. I wanted to share my numbers. 23 pair 127 eggs laid 115 eggs hatched 112 Fledged (including the last 6 that should be leaving the nest today or tomorrow) Bittersweet as this is the most I've ever ha...
