Re: Too many unhatched eggs

Hi, Your hatch percentage is 68.5%, not the best but not that awful either, weather and temperatures have a big impact on hatch rates and fledging success. One year my hatch rate was down to 72.5% the very next year it was up at 90.5 % so they do adjust! I believe the average hatch rate is somewhere...

Re: Ideas wanted for housing portable base

Best way is cement in the ground, they do make ground sockets that can be cemented in level with the concrete then the ground stake is inserted into socket. Please don't use guy wires, snakes and ground predators will have fun with that! I suppose if you are dead set on something portable a base cou...

Re: How to take down an old pole and house for repair

Do you have a tractor with a bucket or know someone that does? That's how I work with mine if something needs repair at the top. I get the bucket up high enough to reach everything if I stand in the bucket then lean an extension ladder against the bucket to get up there. You could also anchor the po...

Re: Gourd Limit for 2" Square Aluminum Pole

Hi, I have a deluxe 18 which is a 2"x 16 ft pole with lift off arms. That rack does much better in the wind than the round rack or AAA rack. One year I even had the extra weight of wire cage on it for owl protection, I was at work and a storm hit that bent two of my other poles over at a 30 degree a...

Re: I’ve inherited Martins! How to do the right thing?

Have you considered building your own house, a T-14 or T-10 would be a good option. Another option would be gourd racks which are very popular with martins, you can use natural gourds for a cheaper option. If you change housing types leave the original in place until martins migrate to the new housi...

Re: Strengthening Pole

A two inch by four ft angle iron at the base and fastened tightly to the pole would be a big help. We had a tornado this spring and my pole with the angle iron remained perfectly straight but the ones on either side were bent!

Re: My Purple Martins Obviously Like Gourds!

My colony started in 2008 with 2 pair, one nest in a Trio and one in a T-14. The colony grew quickly and it seems their main preference is gourds, however the racks with a combination of Trio houses and gourds seems to be the overall favorite.

Re: help? New nature house/trio house won't descend?

Maybe stand out a few yards from the pole and try to unlock it from there. I had one with the rope lanyard and hated it, too much noise going up and down plus sometimes hard to unlock. I have since installed all my trio houses on Multi purpose racks or modified existing racks to support them. Good l...

Re: How Many Gourds on 2" Pole ??

I have a round rack that has a 2”x 4ft angle iron embedded slightly into the concrete just behind the ground stake, on top of the angle it’s tied tightly to the pole. This spring when we had a tornado some of my poles were bent over and one T-14 pole snapped off. The pole with the angle iron attache...

Steve, welcome to the forum It's good that you are hanging some gourds. You mentioned that there are a lot starlings and sparrows which I think will be your #1 problem to attracting martins, trap shoot and kill year around and you should see a reduction. Removing habitat such as shrubs and hedges th...

Re: Which gourd bundle for beginner?

A good starting out rack would be a Deluxe 12 with Troyer gourds, they have a trap that works on the troyer tunnels to trap starlings or sparrows

Re: Clearing trees before they arrive

I know lots of people have them but I started with Big Bo gourds years ago and also have some Bo 9 gourds. Every year that I have had martins I have never had a pair nest in either of those gourds. My rack consists of the ones above as well as TH's and TV's, and they only use the troyers. Due to co...

Re: Hey Ray, Multi-House Question

Thank you for the info. We don't have storage space so our houses and gourds remain outside during the winter. I might look into a deck box for our gourds. I don't know why I'm just thinking of that. Does the single bolt that holds the house to the wood ever work itself loose during bad storms? Not...

Re: Hey Ray, Multi-House Question

The house pictured is model MHPV, no longer sold but it looks simular to your model. It came with the diagonal bracing and 4 gourd arms.Yes, I would install bracing on yours from your hub to the angle iron supports, it looks like you can install a block of wood between the angle arms just like I did...

Re: What other species are your best watch dogs?

Red winged black birds are my favorite, they sit on top of my weather vane or any other tall object and tattle on any hawk nearby. The martins are up in the air instantly when the redwings start screeching.

Why not do both? You can build your T-14 then hang 4 gourds underneath. Would also encourage you to attend a purple martin meeting. There's one over in Frederick Md that meets once a month during spring and summer season. Open education tab above then Martin events to get all the info. We have one m...

My son brings us the center punched out part from a commercial buffing pad, works great for scrubbing the insides. I use a little brush to scrub out the tunnels. After removing the nesting materials I blast most of the dirt out with a water hose before soaking in the bleach/soap mix then it's back t...
