Re: Supplemental Feeding With "Cicadas"

Bill, as long as you have some more Cadis flies left why don't you try to work them into a tray if they recognize them sitting on a perch and then work them into a tray if you get them going that way they won't be using all that energy on cold-weather when you toss them.I fed my birds this morning a...

Re: Newbie needs advice

Dave if you have a round pole and wanted to try something to Strengthen it ,not knowing what size and shape you have is hard to answer but what I would do is take the next size bigger and put it on the outside of your original pole or if your original pole is maybe 2 inch diameter then put the next ...

Re: Any body still have PM to fledge

I have a late nest, ASYM and SYF that have three youngsters two of which fledged today the 14th and I am expecting the last one to fledge tomorrow or the next day. It's neat to watch the parents feed the two outside the nest sometimes in a tree sometimes in flight and then go back and feed the singl...

Just a reminder

Just a reminder don't forget to put that vanilla in the cotton balls for those real late Nests ,this is blackfly season coming up. Just yesterday I had three Nests with brand new pinkies in them and supposed to have more eggs hatching today, those blackflies can kill them very rapidly while they're ...

Re: Hanging by its foot

Hi Dave and thank you for responding to my thread. I also am thinking and hoping that this situation is extremely rare, however these guards are brand new and the traction devices I think have not been out all that long ,so that's the reason for my interest . This morning I did get a chance to go ba...

Hanging by its foot

I recently this spring bought some new Troyer horizontal guards for one of my satellite colonies (Vikings lodge). I just stop by to raise the guards back up because of high winds two days before and I'm very glad I did. There was an ASY female hanging by 1 foot upside down flapping frantically tryin...

Re: Help I.D.'ing Martin

On your second picture I still think the same it's definitely a female probably a three-year-old it's not light enough to be a Subbie and it's not dark enough to be an old female . I'll bet she looks a little better now after a few days of rest and food .

Good luck for the rest of the season. Ed .

Re: Help I.D.'ing Martin

I agree with what flyin- lowe says except I would think that it's not a Male that it's a female because of the light throat but it's hard to say if it's a sub female or an adult female ,to me if I were going to guess the way it's sitting there I would guess it's a sub female ,it looks like she's bee...

Re: Where do PM's go when they disappear in the afternoon?

Hi boot jack; I have also wondered where they disappear to. I live in south western New York state near Chautauqua lake. Within 2 to 4 miles distance on the lake there are there are several large colonies , and a few miles around yet there are several more. On a good day in the afternoon before nest...

Re: Tough couple days of poor weather.

Well, it was another cold cloudy damp but calm morning so I decided to go out and feed the birds. I thought I would toss some before I put food in the trays, but I didn't have any crickets in the freezer as I use deride mealworms mostly . I decided to scramble a egg it,s pretty hard getting a freeze...

Re: Tough couple days of poor weather.

Flying low, very glad to hear you got your birds supplemental feeding. I have to say yesterday was an extremely bad day for us in this area and it was raining most of the day with cold temperatures, at one point it was raining so hard that while the birds for eating out of the tray the water was spl...

Hi Doug, sorry about Waldo it's amazing how attached you can get to a certain bird over a period of time. My foundation bird I had for quite a few years so I know exactly how you're feeling just part of a hobby I guess ,good luck in the rest of the season Ed .

Re: A new twist to supplemental feeding.

Doug my results are very much like you are describing with the supplemental feeding. Toy I had trouble years ago getting mine started too and what I finally did was screwed about five or six decoys all around the tray pointing down into the tray with some of them. Then when those cold days come in e...

Great job Sharon, you worked hard and deserve every bit of pleasure they are going to give you. That's good news Bernbog .Have your SY's been there awhile too or have they just arrived? My problem is I have 18 males and only 3 females. Cransey up north has the same deal! Good luck the rest of the season. Ed.
