Feeding Eggs

This isn't the normal time for supplemental feeding, but I want my martins to know what chicken eggs are and to eat them from the bed and breakfast. Last spring was an absolute nightmare. I lost 2/3 of my colony, and this year have only 20 babies, as opposed to the 80 fledged last year. I have been ...

Re: The Lone Chick seems to be pulling through.

I tagged on to this post because I am not sure what to do. I have a lone chick too, and had 2 chicks yesterday. He is about the age of the one pictured above, but as far as I can see no one is paying any attention to him. I will change his nest as suggested, but I am worried about the fact that he i...

Re: We had 30 martins, now have 3

Thank you so much for your support, Dave and Lady Bug. Probably I have been fortunate that nothing like this has happened before. This morning the birds were actually chattering. It lifts my spirits. I appreciate hearing from you all.

Re: We had 30 martins, now have 3

We have been invaded by tree swallows. This morning I had 8 martins show up, defending their housing. They are making noise, and acting as if nothing happened. They are ASY birds, so maybe there will be sub adults coming yet. But at least it is more than three. Brad, your info was interesting about ...

Re: We had 30 martins, now have 3

It is possible that the sy's could come through. I thought maybe they had been killed also. The three martins that are here are so quiet. No singing, no sitting outside on their porches and chattering. Deathly quiet. They leave in the morning and come back at sunset. Very abnormal behavior. I don't ...

We had 30 martins, now have 3

10 days ago we were enjoying 30 martins. We only have 3 left after the cold killed off so many. Three seem to return every evening, but no subbies. Probably if they don't nest, we will have lost our martin hobby, I would guess. Needless to say we are very depressed, but nothing could be done. The Mo...

Re: Cold/Cool weather questions.

No more deaths. I saw three martins this am. on the T-14, and saw about 5 coming in last night landing. I started out with about 30, so that is a rather large death toll. The Martins this morning were exploring nesting cavities and preening. They have left now to feed. I have been keeping the Bed an...

Re: Cold/Cool weather questions.

I think the carnage may be over. I started out with about 30 martins here, and the die-off was unbelievable. I saw 6 martins come in for the night Wednesday night, then 1 on the T-14 yesterday. Nothing last evening until almost dark, then 4 or 5 came back to the T-14. This morning there were four pr...

Re: Cold/Cool weather questions.

I think some sort of heating is a good idea. However the hand warmers are only good for a few hours, even though they say 10 hours. Hot water bottles (if you happen to have 12 or 15 lying around) also cool off. I used a lot of cedar shavings and pine straw, but it didn't seem to matter. It has been ...

Re: Cold/Cool weather questions.

Well, the carnage continues. Three more dead martins, and it didn't even get into the low 30's last night. They were all in 1 gourd. Maybe 12 or 15, some smothered, some starved. Two bodies blocked the door. I checked the gourds at 10 this morning, and had to push all of the live ones out. They all ...

Re: May white out!

Yes, I am definitely looking forward to warmer weather. The little sick one I found today is still alive, and bites me when I try to feed her, so that makes me happy. The Bed and Breakfast is loaded, but the martins aren't coming in yet, so maybe they will finally decide to eat from it. This has bee...

Re: May white out!

I lost three more Martins last night, probably due to starvation and overcrowding. I had quite a few fly this morning when I untangled the pile in one gourd, but there is still one that is hanging on. I used the sugar suggestion, and it did perk her up, but no guarantee that she will live. Where do ...

Re: May white out!

Unfortunately the female martin died, too. I think they give up living when they are away from any other martins. She was doing well while the male was alive. Disgusting weather again today. Cold, in the 30's, very windy and rain from time to time. I guess I will have to check the martin housing aga...

Re: May white out!

I still have the female martin. She has a hard time maintaining her body temperature, and she is in a very warm part of the house. I sat on the deck this evening until nine watching what was left of my colony come back. I wanted to see what condition they were in. They were able to feed some, but ke...

Re: May white out!

Well, the male martin that made it through the night has died this afternoon. He was the one I found on the ground. I guess when Doug stated that the ones that are on the ground are more difficult to save, that was correct. The female was still in the box, but very cold. She ate two more crickets, a...

Re: May white out!

Not a good report this morning. I put hand warmers in the cavities, and while doing so noticed a bird on the ground unable to fly but still alive. Then I discovered his mate in the nest in the same condition. I took them into the house (against the law) and handed them to my husband. I found a box a...

Re: May white out!

I will try the handwarmers. The crickets and eggs are already inside the T-14. In some cases they have thrown them out on the porches. I was trying to think of some way to get them warm. Some of them are flying now, but tonight will be another thing. Ihave never faced anything like this with my colo...

Re: May white out!

I am losing birds. I have crickets and eggs out, but they won't eat. They are piling up in the nesting cavities in the T14, and freezing to death. I can touch them all. Would there be any point in bringing them inside in a cage? I realize that would cause stress, but no worse than what is happening....
