Re: Weird things going on with martin nest?
Hello Kansans! Is that the only nest you have? New colony? I didn't read your profile maybe the answer is there. It could be a case of her laying in two nests. I know Paola! I do craft shows and have set up at your Roots Festival. I am trying to decide my August schedule to see if I can make it back...

Re: VERY FIRST Nest Check Question - New Colony
You are too cute I gotta say. Lol. I am so glad you dropped the rack and did it. I knew you wouldn't have eggs this early but wanted you to get past the fear of running them off. I do believe you are right about your big man on campus being the same bird. That it is the same bird. Congrats to the fo...

Re: What are your Martins saying?
No you are just crazy and have the Martin Fever. No doctor needed. Ha1 I just love love love their vocalizations. Most relaxing noise ever. So beautiful. I hope if I end up demented in a facility that someone brings in a Dawn Song CD and staff plays it for me. I guarantee it will relax me. Coffee an...

Re: VERY FIRST Nest Check Question - New Colony
Do it! Lol. I hope you have done it by now and then you will know things are good. Tonight I sold a pickup. Dad and Dad's friend were checking it all over and took it for a test drive. Wife and two boys stayed here. Ages 8 and 2. So...I dropped a house. The older boy took over cranking the winch dow...

Re: Are they doing what they need too?
I remember thinking and feeling the same way awhile back. A long while back. Lol. Then I realized they lay one egg a day. When they have completed their clutch whether it is 3 to 8 eggs then they sit the nest and incubate. So egg 1 sits for days. I suppose the females are out eating as much as possi...

Re: I have 2 pair now!
Awesome!! It's funny that Toy mentioned pinkies. A couple of nights ago my mark told me how he hates the looks of newly hatched baby birds. He even shuddered a bit. True to how everyone is different I told him I love them! I think they are so cute and marvel at how strong their little necks are. I g...

Re: No Sparrows
I do have four Troyer Horizontal Gourds so they have the long tunnel entrance. Sparrows like them as well as everything else. But the trap that goes with them works well.

Re: Great nest check today
Wow! Super colony in your future! Right now I have about 34 pairs, offering 44 cavities. No babies have hatched. About a week away from that at least. Don't you just love the singing and noise 30 pairs gives you? Do you have much House Sparrow pressure? I stay busy trapping. Doing my best to get rid...

Re: Has anyone tried anti wing entrapment inserts?
Not with gourds. My Trendsetter housing came with them. However, after never having wing entrapment in my previous S&K housing with crescent entrances I have had two in the TS's. I have had them for four years I think. Year 2 and 3 both had one wing entrapment death. Both times I freed a PM stuck in...

Re: No Sparrows
Ok that is amazing. I have 8 gourds (4 under two houses) and the sparrows love them. A combo of Supergourds and Troyer Horizontals. I am jealous. Keep an eye of course and I so hope the investigators become your colony starters!

Re: House Finch Babies
Kyler,
I love all birds with PM's being the King. Last year I watched a pair of House Finches nest in a previous year Oriole nest which is not far from my kitchen window. Watching them come and go feeding sure helped doing the dishes. I've never seen their eggs or babies so thank you!

Re: Help with implementing use of gourd insert trap
I have that trap but haven't used it. Makes sense, huh? When I added interior porches and new exterior ones to my Supergourds I had a gap that I used caulking on so no birdy feet would get caught. But with the interior porch I guess if I can remember...the trap I ordered won't work. So I planned on ...

Re: 2 Unwanted Guests, 1 Flyby, & A Question
Hello Smiths! I am impressed with your setup and admire your determination for the 13 years. FLYBY, wow! I agree that the HOSP has to go. BB gun is great. Practice with targets and take some shots. House and gourd traps work well too. Do you have any of them? I looked at your setup. I would say it l...

Nice Matt! I can follow that! LOL
Yeah...sorry SYM. I love this time of year when I can sit inside in my chair and hear my colony happily doing its thing. Have a great weekend, Matt and Archer!

Re: Help with implementing use of gourd insert trap
Betty, I like you idea of allowing nest building by the HOSP and then switch and bait and gotcha! It is fortunate if you only have one HOSP at your colony site and you must be doing something right. I slacked all winter and have been trapping and euthanizing heavily and I still see HOSP sitting on m...

Nest check and ID'ing a dead PM
Hello all. I posted this on my facebook page for my friends who know I am a PM nut. My reference to cooking is I own my own business doing jam, jellies, and pickles etc...and traveling to seven states for festivals and craft shows on the weekends. Here is my post: PURPLE MARTIN UPDATE - Yay!!! I off...

Re: Managing Chicks
So exciting! That peeking out the entrance by babies is special for sure. I read that you modified and made your compartments bigger, that is excellent. I nest check frequently which looks like you are too. I offer crushed oyster shell. Some place on a platform feeder I just throw out on a bare spot...
