Re: Modified Super Gourd Using Old Friend Dap

Well, I don't believe in Martins gods, but you'll get them. There's only One that I believe in. Are you completely starting over? Seems I read you post something about either reducing your colony or quitting for a few years. Some believe the soul goes to heaven, but the spirit remains. If so I wish...

From one razorback to another, I enjoy reading your post and viewing your photos. Nashville,AR. home of the Bowie Knife. I started with this site in 09, but weren't you connected with " Entrances by Sandy" of NC.

Re: North wind arrivals.

I had seven more this morning. Came in late yesterday. I went out and opened the remaining 16 cavities, have 32 total. I think based on your new arrivals more will be coming in this evening. I now have 13, 11 ASY males and 2 ASY females. Heavy rain is forecast for the next 4 days. The martins that g...

Re: PMCA Wing Entrapment Protectors heads up....

The original wep is also effective at stopping starlings from entering the crescent sreh. My first application of the wep was on a crescent sreh on one of my Safe Haven houses. A starling had got in and laid 2 eggs before I attached the wep over the entrance and the starling was not able to re enter...

Re: PMCA Wing Entrapment Protectors heads up....

I am disappointed that such an effective device as the original WEP has been discontinued for a more effective wing entrapment protector for the the Trendsetter and Sunset Inn Houses. Don't get me wrong if the new design will stop wing entrapment in this equipment, then it is worth the new design, b...

Brad, good to here your first birds have arrived. I had 2 arrive on 2/5 and thought they were lost in the storms, rain and low temps, but they survived and have added 5 more. I sent another post but it disappeared. ha.

Re: First starlings

if it is a Troyer Horzontal gourd with round hole and cling plate, they make a trap for that gourd ,Haskel/S trap that works good in trapping starlings. I used it a lot when I started. The round hole THZ gourd would attract starlings and keep them from trying my Crescent and Conley II sreh entrances...

Re: Scout arival

Thanks , David.PM David and Conrad. The never fail return is always a mystery for me and I feel blessed they have come back. They are wild birds, but somehow I feel I am more responsible for their welfare. My wife and I do feeder watch for Cornell University. We have a multitude of song birds that v...

Re: problem with break winch

You may be right, but I have operated it with less weight. The 2 houses with 3/4 in plywood mounting weigh close to 50 lbs. I will try some weights over 50 and see what happens. Thanks.

problem with break winch

I had my MP rack lowered and took my Safe Haven houses and gourds off for cleaning. I discovered with a couple of cranks I could raise the rack with houses attached a few inches but the brake winch would not lower. If I cranked the handle in reverse , the gear ? would unwind and handle would come lo...

Re: Forest fires in Brazil's Amazon rain forest

In our lifetime? I am 80 years old and I hope they return to my 32 gourds and house site. I am concerned what will happen to my martins in Brazil. The question I have will be about their food supply. Is it dependent on the rain forest or will they go elsewhere to find food ? I grew up hunting bob wh...

You may be right in that they need to feed their people, but I believe it's more about the money.

Re: Forest fires in Brazil's Amazon rain forest

I think when the PMCA was formed , Mr Hill when ask thought the PM demise would be lack of housing or nesting sites. I read in in Summer Update PMCA is planning a research trip to Brazil. We as protectors of the purple martin must realize that we can not wish this away. We need to with the rest of h...

I ask this question? If you need to find the information necessary to establish a successful martin colony where would you look? This forum has been a great help for me. The problems or questions are addressed forthwith. I can or could rely on those who have gone before to give me advice. I am reluc...

Matt F., good to see your post on the Forum. I don't think I've ever posted anything offensive , but if I have I apologize. I miss all of the old timers and people that started when I did in 09. John Miller was great help when I was overrun with starlings my first year and encouraged me to keep goin...

Re: Cutting My Own Trio Entrances

Try using POLYMAX (HDPE) high density polyethylene . UV stable. I used it on my modifications for flooring and it has held up to UV degradation. You can buy small 1/8 in.sheets on Amazon or you can can buy a 4 x 8 ft 1/8" sheet from FarmTek for much less.

Re: Question about different types of openings

I still contend that the Conley II is as easy for martins to enter as round holes. I have had both at the same time on THG's and notocied no difference, but before you alter the Conley II , the martins need to learn how to enter the Conley II,i.e., the martins learn to enter the Conley II straight o...
