Under Attack !!! ???

Fledging is almost complete at my site and it has been a successful season aside from some losses due to inclement weather in early May. Over the years I have lost the occasional Martin to a hawk attack, but never anything more than one at a time. That all changed last night. On my morning walk arou...

Re: Preparing for next Spring's cold/supplemental feeding

RandyM; Good idea stocking up on what nature provides for supplemental feeding. A couple of years ago when the 17 yr. Cicadas emerged here I filled several coffee cans with them, and froze them. They sure came in handy the following spring, the Martins loved them. Keep up the good work. Hanover Bill.

Re: Finding a few on the ground

Rob; I guess I have a unique process for determining their air worthiness. I get a pretty good feel for it after feeding them for a day or two. Next up is a flight test. I have a large field, about 3 acres, which drops off from my site location. It is wide open all the way to a tree line, and ideal ...

Re: Finding a few on the ground

Flyin-Low; I just picked up my 5th one off the ground. I also think there are more hitting the ground this year than previous years. My formula has been to place them in a suitable cage, keep them overnight, and feed them lots of crickets. It's amazing how quickly they gain strength on that regimen....

New Avian Disease ??

Does anyone have any information on this new Avian disease which is killing off a wide variety of song birds in quite a few states. Here in Southwestern Pa. local news stations are recommending people take down their bird feeders in order to stop the spread. So far it hasn't reached our area, but it...

Re: Dead babies and missing eggs

Buckeye; I have also had more disappearing eggs than usual this year. I also found two hatchlings almost out of one gourd entrance. The only way this could have happened would be for them to be dragged there. My conclusion is shenanigans by SY males. My one gourd had 6 eggs in it, and now has just o...

Smaller Subbies ??

A pretty good wave of Subbies arrived here in Western Pa. in the last few days. One thing I noticed is that they appear noticeably smaller than the Subbies of previous years. Has anyone else noticed this or is it just my old senior eyes playing tricks on me? Would appreciate other opinions on this. ...

Re: How in the world do you guys count Martins?

I think about the only way to get a close to accurate count is to wait until they lay eggs, then figure you have a pair of Martins for each nest with eggs in it. Add a few to the count for non-nesting SY birds and you probably have a close estimate. Trying to count in any other way just leads to fru...

Re: All my martins are dying. Any advice?

Patience, patience, patience. Just keep flipping as others here have said. It took me several years before I got the firs one to take my offering, then you're off to the races. Now if they are hungry they come at me when I go out the back door. Now I have them trained to go down to the bed and break...

Re: Cicadas?

If you have the Cicadas in your area, and you normally have to supplemental feed in the spring, I would recommend that you catch and freeze as many as you can. I did this a couple of years ago when they came out in my area. I used them for supplemental feeding the next spring, and the Martins loved ...

Toy & Dave; Thanks for the words of encouragement. The losses make me more determined to help the ones I can, so it's full speed ahead for the rest of the season.

Difficult to Tally Losses

After suffering substantial losses due to the weather this season, one is left to wonder exactly how many birds were lost as I'm sure some just drop out of the air and never make it back to the housing. I have found several just laying on the ground, apparently just dropping in mid flight, so we can...

Nightmare Day

Well I just suffered the worse day since I became a Landlord. I've had my ups and downs, but nothing like this. I noticed a dead Martin on the ground so I figured I better look into it. Next were 2 more on the ground which led to a whole house inspection at which time I found ,6 in my gourds and 2 m...

Re: Another killing May in PA

Hi Doug; I was just getting ready to e-mail you to see if you have lost any birds. I lost "11" so far. Just noticed one on the ground this afternoon and figured I better do a better inspection. Found 2 more on the ground, 6 in gourds, and 2 in my T-14. All of this even though I have been feeding. Yo...

Re: Disappearing Martins

Thanks to all for the good responses. Glad to say Martins are back as of this morning. To answer some of the questions I have never had a problem with predators other than this resident hawk. I have good predator guards on all of my housing, and have never had evidence of night time predation, owl f...

Disappearing Martins

I have seen this before but not to the extent that it is happening now. Three days ago my sky was full of Martins. For the last three days you wouldn't know there was an active site here. This coincides with two possible causes, the arrival of some wet windy weather, and the arrival of a persistent ...

Re: Cicada's this year in my area

Two years ago when we had our outbreak I froze about three coffee cans full of them and used them to supplemental feed the following spring. Worked out great, the Martins loved them, saved me money, and just maybe I cut down on the future outbreaks. If you are due for an outbreak this summer, and yo...

Re: Training Martin's to take food...how?

Brent; Patience, patience, patience. I didn't think I would ever get my Martins to take supplemental feeding, but patience finally paid off. Just keep trying, as others have mentioned it just takes that first brave soul to make the first move and you're on your way. What a great feeling it is when t...

Re: Closing our site

Larry & Judy; It's always sad to learn of a colony closing, but such is life. This is one of the things that is so fascinating about our Martins, and for that matter, other wildlife. They teach us valuable life lessons. When met with unexpected hardships, like a closed colony, they adapt, no time is...
