This Wind

This wind today delivered me four Purple Martins today for my first report this season. This is the reason spring is my favorite time of year. Hope things go well this year.

Re: Spring Sprung in SW Missouri

Hello Jeff, that is good to hear. Hope you have a good year. Hello to you also Kathy. The last few days I have been straining both my eyes and ears and have seen and heard nothing. I know that I am just being impatient. Keith

Re: What's the best hole to use

Thanks Matt, this house is 100% occupied this year. Never had any luck with this house before tunnels. If the hole in house is cut out a specific size, the tunnel attaches easily. I tried to post picture, but an L-bracket fastened to back of tunnel hooks up on inside of hole.

Re: What's the best hole to use

Hello Mark, some years back before I started using the Clinger, I modified a couple of Trios to larger compartments and had regular Crescent openings. I added material on the porch in front of each entrance to make it almost to entrance. Of course that door will not open but I just open the one at b...

Re: What's the best hole to use

I have modified some houses building tunnels with this entrance, The martins seem to love them and are successful in resisting the Starling. I will try and post picture.

Re: What's the best hole to use

From the ones I have used, the clinger entrance provides the desired outcome. The porce almost level with entrance is needed with any entrance in my opinion to keep Starlings out. Keith

Re: Starling plague

Here is my experience with Starlings. Real difficult to host Martin's if Starlings can enter the housing. My problems went away when using the Clinger entrance with built in wing guards. The porch is also flush with the entrance hole. Proven the last 3 years. I offer 100 compartments and yes an occa...

Re: Mysterious Predator

Several years ago I had an issue with raccoons that ended an 18 pair colony in just a few days before I knew what was going on. Of course I didn't have any predator guards. No Martin's for the next 2 yrs. Sure missed them. We now host around 75 pair every year and always use predictor guards. Hope t...

Re: Wet BO9 Gourds

I was actually referring to the bo11 and not the bo9 when I always experienced dry nests.the bo11 plus gourd has an inner liner and there is actually an air space between the nest and bottom. This combined with the ultimate Clinger tunnel and the cooling cap really allow for a lot of venting. When u...

Re: Martins on offense - Hawk

Appears the martins located the hawk before it got too close to grab one. Many times that is not the case however. Hope they continue to be on guard. Too many times my martins chase a hawk while it is carrying one away. Good luck.

Re: Wet BO9 Gourds

I personally have found that the cooling caps (that cost very little and improves ventilation) along with the clinger tunnels allow for nice dry nests. Keith

Re: PMCA Wing Entrapment Protectors heads up....

The S&K gourd with the Clinger tunnel entrance ended my Starling problems. Starlings in my opinion cause a lot of problems for Martins and I have tried other entrances with some degree of disappointment. These Clinger tunnels have built-in wing entrapment.

Re: Purple Martin arrival in Licking, Missouri

Congratulations Kathy, been watching for this announcement. It is interesting to see that gap on the arrival map in that area of Mo. and down into Ark. This doesn’t look normal to me, but may be common. Hope you have a great season.

Re: Leap year

Jeff, congratulations to you also. Kathy, if I was passing through Sikeston that would be my plan for sure. Your birds usually come about the same time as ours give or take a day. Mine and Jeff’s birds must have gotten on the same “Air bus”. Also Kathy, I have had many friends, neighbors, and family...

Leap year

Only because of Leap Year can I say two martins arrived in February. A little early for me here in southern Missouri. At least the weather looks pretty good for the next week. I barely had my housing ready,
They kinda slipped up on me. I’m getting excited.
