Re: Help with logistics of T-14, pole, and predator guard

Birdiegirl, I built my t14 in 2005. I bought the plans from PMCA. It's an easy read and has lots of pictures on the house build. It also shows you how to build a nice straight laminated post which is still straight after 16 years. The plans also show how to make slide out trays for each compartment....

Re: Under Attack !!! ???

Owls at my colony hang on the 2x4 inch wire cage, shake the housing, and spook birds out, catching them as they struggle through the wire to escape. The owls always took there prey to the ground, under the housing to eat, leaving no flesh or meat but just feathers in a pile. I have both great horned...

Re: Mites!!!

I have never used apuffer duster. Just use a teaspoon and about 1/4-1/2 tsp. seven and add it under or in the wall of the nest, not on the chicks. I usually add on the front part of nest, close to the entrance, just tap it in with the edge of the spoon. In a day most mites will be gone. If you are r...

Re: Sevin under Bluebird nest.

I use seven inmy bluebird boxes when I see mites. Works great. Here lately it's been ants. Lots of rain lately and ants are comming out of the ground into my boxes. Sevin works on ants as well.

Re: Dead babies and missing eggs

CAK, I have northern white pine in my yard so it's easy to rake up several bags of pine needles. I place needles in all of my housing and gourds before the birds arrive. Sometimes the birds add more and sometimes they take it all out. I keep a supply of straw at the feeder station including oyster s...

Re: Dead babies and missing eggs

CAK, a lot of the activity you talk about are paired subadults that don't know what they're doing. They build flimsy and small nests that don't have enough material in them so eggs roll allover the compartment , thus they're probably not incubated properly. The birds are not mature enough to really ...

Re: Dead babies and missing eggs

I agree with Hanover Bill. This is called infanticide and happens a lot . A SY male will kick babies and eggs out, chase the male away and mate with the female to start his own family. The damage is real, the eggs and babies are gone, but I don't know how successful the SY males are in getting their...

Re: Alternative winch system for trio mini castle

Tom, I would stickwith the trio winch and hardware because they are designed for there houses. It really works well on my castle and minicastle. Erva stated that winches and kits are coming in september. You probably won't get started with the conversion until this fall anyway, after the birds are g...

Re: Nature house mss 12 lanyard lock question

Rob, this is what I did. It will be an out of season project. My castle has a tube inside the house that is attached to the house and goes up and down with the house on the pole. It's called a house tube. It sticks out the bottom of the house two or three inches. It's about 33 inches long. In the po...

Re: Nature house mss 12 lanyard lock question

Erva has the one winch and cable system and it works on all trios that move up and down the pole. It's the same one that comes with the castle. I've not had any problems with the winch and cable. Thecable is only 1/16 inch diameter, pretty small but holds up well even on the heavy castle.

Re: Mites!!!

Conrad, I can't answer your questions because I've never pretreated with liquid seven. I like the dust inside under the nest or in the sides of the nest when there are eggs. I like the liquid onthe outside when I see mites because it sticks onthe surfaces and stays. The liquid works as well as the d...

Re: Birds Not Liking Decoy

I place my decoys on top of 10 ft. pvc pipe and move them around the yard every other day. I've never placed them onmy houses or gourds because I think they need to direct hawks away from the birds not to them. I think the decoys work to some degree but I think hawks kind of get use to them also. Dave

I have a mini castle that had the lanyard lock and rope. I did not like it. Itwould stick on top of pole. I replaced with winch and cable. Take the rope and lanyard off and throw away. Replace with winch and cable. You will like.

Re: Mites!!!

I usually put 1/4 to 1/2 tsp. seven in or under the nest when I see eggs. That gets me thru the season but may have to spot treat some. Liquid seven works great on the outside of gourds especially under the service lid. For some reason, mites love that area.

Re: Wooden House Observations

I have a cedar T14 with cedar nest trays. I don't recall the trays ever getting really wet but the floors ofthe T14 can get wet from rain blown in. My nest trays have on the bottom four finishing washers attached by small screws. This keeps the trays off the floors and if they get wet, the floors wi...
