Re: 2019 Migration
That last scout report in Iowa from Evan was 8 days earlier than he ever had. He called me yesterday and said that his son thought that he was going to shoot a starling and when he looked through the scope he saw it was a male martin. I don't know what that martin thinks he is going to eat this earl...

Re: The 14th of March could be Magic
Those winds are definitely bringing them north. I heard that a friend of mine in south west Iowa got a martin on the 12th. His earliest arrival ever.

The sparrow revenge happens when you take out their nest, not if you shoot one of them. I stop doing nest removals when the martins start laying eggs.

Happy to hear that you have one back and it sure is a good thing that you have taught them to supplemental feed with the weather that we have coming this weekend.

Re: Gourd Rack Faceoff, what's your fave?
I have the AAA16 and the round rack which they do not make anymore that holds 12 gourds. I like working with the round rack the best and the martins seem to like it the most. At the satellite colony that I take care of we have 2 K-12 racks and one K-18. I really like them and if I was to add another...

Re: Help - inheriting a colony...
Jon, thanks for wanting to put up housing for those martins that will come back and if there is no housing for them they will hover over the spots where their old homes used to be. For me that would be a sad thing to witness. You are on the right track for wanting to put up a gourd rack or two and t...

Re: Polywood vs cedar t14
Using nest trays and the amount of nesting material brought in by the martins I wouldn't think leg splay would be a problem. My cedar T-14 has been up all year long for 12 years and I have only needed to repaint once. The roof does need to be painted this fall though. I used an oil based primer and ...

Great report, Lynn. Looks like you will still have a few martins hanging out in August. Hope the rest of the young make it in all this heat.

Re: Mud Dams at the Quarry
The Troyer vertical gourds are fairly shallow which leaves the nest somewhat exposed. The martins like to hide their nest bowl as much as possible and that is why they build the mud dams. They do the same thing in the un-modified Trio houses. J L Murray came up with the idea of installing a Super go...

Fewer scout reports this season
I just did a count of the Iowa reports for last season and this season as of the 11th and this year the reports are down by half.
Having to log onto a different place other than the forum seems to have kept a lot of people from reporting.

I found out the hard way that sparrows can get through the loop without tripping the trap and that is why the rubber band is there.

I am just wondering how many people are going to forget their login name and password when they only use this function once a year. Is there a way to recover that information if lost?
