Roosts in Central Kentucky 2021

The central Kentucky roost is typically located around Lexington, Nicholasville, or Richmond. This summer the roost has unevenly split into two roosts. For the third year in a row the birds are roosting in Richmond and the new second roost is in Winchester. At Winchester the birds have chosen a wood...

Re: Couple First-Timer Questions about the "Aftermath"

There is a pre-migratory roost in central Kentucky each year comprised of tens of thousands of martins. The roost forms in late July as birds complete nesting and continues towards the end of August before the birds head south. What you are observing right now are birds returning to your yard each m...

Re: questions from a new landlord- sparrows!

Hey birdwatcher if there are currently lots of house sparrows hanging around in general, maybe bunches of recent fledglings, my strategy is to capture them in a walk-in ground trap. You can eliminate a lot of future competition now by removing the recent fledglings - and they are easy to catch compa...

There was a large roost ring visible this morning on radar at Nashville. The ring appeared to be centered southeast of town.

Re: What radar is best?

I like the Weather Underground website: https://www.wunderground.com/radar/us You can only animate the last hour of radar so it is important to look for roosts between 6:30 and 7:00 in the morning. Another website is from Plymouth State University https://vortex.plymouth.edu/myowxp/rad/nids.html The...

Lycoming County Pennsylvania Colonies

My brother lives in Hughesville, Pennsylvania east of Williamsport in Lycoming County. He is thinking about setting up some housing to attract martins but has not seen the first purple martin colony in his area. I was wondering if anyone on the forum manages a martin colony in that area?

Re: Introduction

That is good news indeed! The Appalachians need a purple population boost, so thank you for beginning that journey with the birds. Considering your good luck with the martins this spring, did evening grosbeaks grace your bird feeders this past winter?

Re: Cicadas?

Periodical cicadas emerged in 2008 here in northeast Kentucky. I could pick up a cicada from my lawn, toss it into the air to make it fly, and one of the martins would swoop in and catch it. Of course I observed them catching cicadas without my participation as well. Many times I watched individual ...

Re: Put up a Martin House for Looks... it's covered in Birds! Now What?

MJM it is not too late to change your forum user name to something more appropriate like the "Reluctant Martin Landlord." I am so happy that the martins added function to the form. Good job on moving the tree swallow gourd away from the house. And thank you for increasing the Kentucky purple martin ...

Re: No wonder!!! Definitely a rant!!

Assuming it is safe to shoot maybe ask a family member or friend who is a hunter and can use a shotgun. Hundreds of #7-shot steel BBs increase your odds of hitting the target the first time. There are several perches around my yard (lilac bush, maple tree, juniper) that the house sparrows use away f...

Liquid Sprays for Mite Control

Thinking about controlling mites in nests for the first time in 2021. As an alternative to a popular insecticide dust to control mites, I would like to try a liquid spray. To avoid violating forum policy I won't name the product or provide a link. It is an all natural control for mites and bedbugs i...

Re: New to purple martins

Purple martins love to nest in Texas so that is a big plus for you. First step and I recommend doing it now is to decide what type of housing you want. Start simple with your first housing choice and then add on from there. By simple I mean a gourd rack that can hold 6, 8, or 12 gourds, or a 12-unit...

Re: roost sites

https://www.wunderground.com/radar/us I actually prefer this site because it allows me to zoom in on a roost radar image such that I can choose a location within a county where to begin searching for the roost. The drawback is that it only stores the last hour of radar so you have to remember to loo...

Re: My Martins just vanished!!!

Instead of taking the house down now to check it, you might ask someone with a 12-foot ladder to check the house in its upright position. I have experienced the same thing some years. When the birds fledged, the entire colony moved off to a new location and my yard became very quiet.

Roost Watch Event - Need Advice

A number of you have planned and coordinated roost watch events in past years. The martins are the main attraction of course but I was wondering what additional martin-related activities and/or programs worked best at your roost watch? Anything specific for children? At the last PMCA conference in E...
