Re: Another killing May in PA

Hi Doug, It is a rough going this time on year with the weather. It seems that we have not had a normal spring in years as far as temp go. I bought 20 pounds of crickets this year and I have already went through 10 pounds. I guess all we can do is keep up the good fight and try the best we can. Sorr...

Re: Help! Should I Put A Second House Up?

Yes. You are safe to put more housing up. Once your ASY pair started building their nest, they are dedicated to your site and will not leave. Try to put up the housing when they are out foraging fior insects during the mid afternoon, or whenever they are usually out away from their housing. You shou...

Re: Transplanting Martins from one colony to a new one

Ditto. It will just take time for her to get her own martins started at her location. It seems like a good idea and quick fix, but it is not good for the SY martins to be transplanted in a new place.

Re: COLD in Mn

Hi. MarkinMN, Please place your frozen and then thawed cricket right on the purple martin housing porches or just inside the tunnel, but don't block their ability to enter and exit their cavity. In doing this method, the martins do not expend energy and their food source is lierally right in front o...

Re: Help with house design

Mcetta,
Great design. The best remedy is lots of waiting for the first martin. It took six years to get my first pair and I had ideal conditions for martins. Continue all of your martin attraction techniques and understnad that they will come when they come. I wish you the best.

Re: shooting sparrow with shotgun?

Hi Jeff, Maybe I read your post wrong and correct me if I need be. Are you shooting the sparrows that are near or on your martin houses ? If that is the case, the answer would be a big no, do not use a shotgun to shoot sparrows at or near the martin houses. If you are shooting sparrows that are phys...

Re: Seeking warmth

Hi Duke,
If you can supplement feed the martins with frozen and thawed crcikets, place the crickets on their cavity porches or just inside the cavity / house / gourd. If you choose scrambled eggs, don't use oil to prepare the scrambled eggs and cut them up into small pieces.

Re: Suffocation risk?

Continue to use the hand warmers. Lower the house, put in the warmers, wipe of the snow from the entrance, and place crickets just inside the enrance to the side of the tunnell, but don't block their entrance. You need to supplement feed. The hand warmers are a bonus for the martins. The entrance re...

Re: Seeking warmth

Hi Duke,
You are correct. The martins will sit on the roof shingles to absorb heat. If you scramble eggs in little pieces without using oil; do so and spread them on the roof if possible. The martins are looking for food in addition to heat to survive.

It appears that the closest landlords who have reported their martins on the websites scout arrival are: Mark Gore from Marathon and Kelly Scheiderer from Edgar. I hope this info helps.

It is good to see a responsible landlord like you. The martins would not survive without assistance from great landlords. Keep supplement feeding and hopefully they will all pull through the bad weather.

Re: Cold weather feeding lesson

Great info everyone, I flip crickets during times when they are in reelatively healthy condition. If my martins wings are really drooping, I place the crickets right on their housing porches. In placing them on the porches they use less energy than flying for the flipped crickets and can store that ...
