Re: Sub adults and nesting

In my experience the SY's will start nest quicker then ASY's. However it could still be several weeks after they arrived. I would say after another week or two you will see some nesting material comIsn't in.

Re: A bit of good news

Did you have an established colony that you moved from? I had to move and leave a colony behind a few years ago. Curious how you did things. When we sold our house I already had the martin housing up and they were about to arrive so the new owner agreed to leave it up. I kind of thought he might tak...

Re: Subadults in northern Illinois near Lake Michigan?

I am about 3 hours south east of you in Central Indiana. I haven't confirmed any SY's yet but I have seen few littles squabbles going on which I suspect. I just have been busy enough with work and the kids I haven't been able to go outside and watch long enough to confirm if they are SY's or not. I ...

Re: I need help to resize photos

I just right click the photo and depending on what version of windows you have you can hit the "edit button" or open the picture with microsoft paint. Once it paint hit the resize button at the top and then drop the pixels down. I think the forum has the limit set at 500 pixel max on any side. Here ...

Re: Too late?

When you said they are bringing sticks in, did you literally mean sticks or are you just seeing nesting material. I have never found actual sticks in my martin nests. There are other birds that build nests with sticks. If you can post some pictures of your housing and your yard/property. We might he...

Re: Almost gave up...ASY Male showed up today....Then I killed 3 HSP's

I would leave the tree swallows where they are as it appears to be working. Right now the tree swallows will not allow other tree swallows in the immediate area. If you moved your TS much further away then another pair of tree swallows will move into your martin housing. Congrats on the ASY, hoe he ...

Re: Can't believe it, but I have one hanging around

Thats awesome and I hope he stays around and attracts some others. As far as your question I would think it is just luck that this martin was on the same part of the housing as the SY 2 years ago. Anything could happen but it seems unlikely an SY would spend the summer, then choose another location ...

Re: COLD in Mn

I know each area of the country is different when it comes to good sources etc. Where I am from if the highs get into the mid to high 40's they will feed and low overnight temps in the 30's are not enough by itself to harm them. If your highs are in the 50's and it's raining all day for two or three...

Re: Question

Never thought much about the "American" bird aspect. Are they American birds that over winter in the south or are they South American birds that migrate north to bread?... You never know what the future will bring. I can remember as a child in the 70's and 80's you would see huge flocks of "Canadian...

Re: Help with house design

Even in ideal conditions with ideal housing it often times takes several years to get a colony established. Usually the further north you are the less likely you are to get martins staying the first year or two. Martins love to nest in colonies and they have strong site fidelity. So barring somethin...

Re: First birds

Do you have starlings in your area? The round holes can be a magnet for them and they will cause problems. You might look into starling resistant entry holes (SREH). Starlings are thick where I live and would not try to have a colony without them.

Re: PM’s still in the area

I would confirm what you "think" he is doing. It is commonly advised that when starting a new colony it is often times SY martins, which due tend to arrive 4 weeks or so after the older martins (scouts), that start a new colony. So people are often advise when starting a new colony to open their hou...

Re: Disappearing Martins

My experience has been that when bad weather arrives at the start of the season the martins might disappear for a day or two, but it is usually only the martins that are arriving or due to arrive. Once they have been there for a week or two, and then we get bad weather they stick around and try to r...

Re: Strange

How were your temps during the cold spell. I am in the midwest too and we had the cold front come through and snow as well. It was 60 one day, 30 with three inches of snow the next, and more snow the following day but it got up to 45 later that afternoon. So the martins in my area only went about 36...

Re: Feeding other type birds.

When I first got started with martins I didn't because I didn't want to draw in hawks. Not that I have a decent sized martin colony I know they will draw more attention then a feeder would. Once you get 5-10 pair, there is more activity around a martin colony then most bird feeders have. I usually h...

Re: shooting sparrow with shotgun?

I have shot more sparrows than I can count with a shotgun. My housing is too far from my house to be able to hit with a pellet rifle. In the beginning the martins will flush but quickly come back. Depending on how often you shoot, sometimes I've had martins that dont fly off and some that would foll...

How many pairs have you had each year the last few years? Usually predators are the main reason a large established colony goes to zero in a a year.

Re: Starlings!

If you have an ASY pair staying the night more than a day or two that is a very good sign. Sometimes one will stay the night on its way further north. But after a couple days that’s probably not the case. A big percentage of martins these days fledged from SREH so they have no problems at all. I wou...
