Re: Rain, cold...update in central PA

I had a lot of eggs that started hatching yesterday and several that are a few days old. We had a couple hours dry time this morning and then it rained until abou 4:00 pm. We got a break for an hour or so and they were out feeding. Calling for rain every day for the next 8 days, hoping for some dry ...

Re: Opinions please

I am not sure how far along nesting martins are in your area. Here in Indiana I have babies hatching every day. Everyone is busy in and out feeding you so I think it would be odd for an ASY to go to another site and hang out for hours at a time. Which makes me believe that he might be unmated, but t...

Re: Removing old nest

For the most part martins won't have a second set of eggs unless something went wrong very early on in the season with the first set of eggs. If it was later in the season and the babies were killed more then likely they wouldn't lay more eggs at that point.

Re: Maxed OUT!!

The Gemini is the Cadillac of gourd racks in my opinion. There are many good quality racks out there that are a fraction of the price. You should be able to get a good quality set up without getting near the 1,200.00 mark. I have had a AAA 16 gourd rack for years and love it.

Re: Removing old nest

Unless there is a problem with it like being wet and moldy/stinky or infested I would just leave it until they migrate back south. Shouldn't be to much longer if there have fledged young already.

Re: Can't believe it, but I have one hanging around

Even if he doesn't attract a mate this year, he could still get you started next year. Once he comes back as an ASY if there are any females in your area one of them will stay with him. I know numbers are low up there but it's rare to hear of an ASY male not attracting a female.

Re: Can't believe it, but I have one hanging around

I know there are varying opinions. I have always been one to shut the player down once I have a visitor that is staying around. He will do a better job anyone at attracting other martins. If he leaves then I would start it back up. You will get multiple opinions on this. Wishing you the best, it wou...

Re: Egg laying started for me

Nest check number 3 today and I have 10 babies that look like they hatched today and 95 eggs. I have 31 cavities that have nests in them, one I think is abandoned because it had green leaves and now the leaves are brown. Ill watch that cavity to see if there is any activity. Of the 31 cavities 6 of ...

Off topic question about Mockers.

I have some mockingbirds nesting on my property. I have always had some around but the least week I have had the windows open and notice one of them is calling/mimicking other birds at all times of the night, 2-3:00. I heard it last night going through it's rounds of different birds. Is this normal ...

Re: Vents for T-14 question

I just typed 2 inch vent in Amazon and they have some that have the screen so insects can't get in. If you are not one to order stuff online I searched Lowes website and they have them as well.

Re: Nests with eggs abandoned

On this forum you have to edit/resize the photos pretty small to get them to upload. I am not sure what operating system you have but I have windows 10. I right click on the picture and hit edit. The picture opens in microsoft paint and one of the icons at the top is "resize" I change it so the numb...

Re: Only so much I can do

There is some light at the end of the tunnel. There are so many starlings in my area that I rely on SREH and don't even mess with them any more. We literally have flocks of thousands of them. I know every one I killed would help a little bit but the time it would take would not have enough benefit a...

Re: First egg revealing nest check

Congrats, I've had SY's use little to no nesting material. Now that they have laid eggs it won't hurt to add some material under them so the eggs aren't right on the gourd floor. Two weeks ago I had 11 eggs and last week I was over 50. Egg laying is going strong right now in Indiana.

Re: Best time and direction for dawnsong

I am curious how often you are at your house or what your schedule is like during the day. Reason I ask is that the dawnsong will definitely draw them in but some martins can be confused by it. It's possible you could be getting a visitor that does not stick around long if it is blaring too loud. At...

Re: i'm wondering if i have a subadult female visiting?

Take some time and listen close. All the males I have listened will do some clicking at the end of their song. You might not hear it with the "alert" song they sing when they first take off flying. But if it is up cruising around and singing or sitting on the house singing you will hear the clicks a...

Try to post some pictures of the nests and the eggs before you do anything to them. That might shed some light on the situation.

Re: Finally....

Congrats on the visit, hopefully it sticks around. As for the SREH it is not uncommon at all for new arrivals to stick their head and neck into cavities to check them out. Many people get anxiety and think that they can't get in and change over to round. So don't be concerned that it is not going al...

I usually feel like they know what is best. It is odd that they would be roosting outside when you have open compartments. Are you certain they are staying out all night and not just going in after dark and getting back out?

Re: Nests with eggs abandoned

Under most circumstances martins won't just abandon a nest with eggs. Sparrows and starlings can kill martins but my experience has been that sparrows are more likely to peck the eggs. If there was no damage to the eggs I would guess it was some other predator. Snakes would have more then likely eat...
