Re: A lot of visitors

A lot of it is a numbers game. The more visitors you have the more likely that one of them will like it and decide to stay. Good luck and congrats on all the activity.

Re: Overnight Stay (Pictures and Video)

Sounds promising. I am guessing your subadult male is actually an adult female. I don't think there have been any SY reports anywhere near Indiana yet. The line seems to be about TN. There are a couple of lone reports a lot further north but those are not always accurate. It is getting close to the ...

Re: Tough couple days of poor weather.

It is cold but sunny here this morning. All of the martins are sitting out soaking up the sun waiting on the temps to rise some. It is a relief to see them pull through 2 1/2 days of rain and cold. Calling for close to 70 today so all is well again.

Re: Tough couple days of poor weather.

First shot ever at supplemental feeding was a success. I know its the expensive way but my only option was a local pet store. I got 15 dozen crickets for $15.00. I put them in the freezer for about an hour just to knock them out, some died some were really sluggish. At first I only had a male and fe...

Re: Tough couple days of poor weather.

So far today it has been heavy rain and I haven't even seen a martin yet. Not sure if they are staying inside or if they are huddled up in some communal area. Hopefully the rain will slow down a little bit this afternoon so I can give it a shot. I've never had the chance in the past to even try to t...

Re: ? Cable diameter to re-string the winch ?

There is give and take with safety bolts. Drilling a hole in the lower part of a pole has an impact on the strength of the pole. In the grand scheme of things human safety is of the utmost importance but I pay close attention when I am under my systems raising and lowering them. I would rather have ...

Tough couple days of poor weather.

I am not sure how the rest of the midwest is doing but yesterday my martins were able to feed some but it started raining in the afternoon. Today it never got above the mid 40's with off and on rain. Tomorrow it is calling for down pours all day with temps in the 40's again. Sunday it is supposed to...

I saw last night a video that possums eat copperheads and are immune to the venom, I had no idea but checked youtube and saw some videos on there showing them killing poisonous snakes....

Re: Martins killed a snake

I agree the odds of martins killing any snake is slim. I have seen them act the same way toward HOSP. I have had HOSP sitting on and coming to and from their housing all day and really pay it no attention. I have then shot the HOSP and they will follow it to the ground and act the same way. They don...

Re: ? Which oil for braking winch ?

I would just get a cheap bottle of the old fashion 3n1 oil next time you are at a hardware store. They used to come in little metal white bottles with red writing. Now they are plastic but cheap and good to have around.

Re: No room at the inn here.

I here you, the adults seem to be flowing in. I had my first scout a week ago and had three Saturday and this morning I had 16 buzzing around. Not sure how many are from here and how many are passing through, I'll know in a couple days....

Re: Visitors Question

Some people think adding nesting material gives the cavity that "lived in" look making it appear as martins have stayed there in the past. Some do it just so they don't have to spend as much energy building and as much time on the ground which can be dangerous to them. I usually add some to some cav...

Re: Mortified by Bad Timing

The people physically having to move the pole will be more stressed then the martins over a 20 foot move. I would try to set up the houses in the same formation and oriented the same way and I bet they will be just fine. I think if they just started arriving they haven't even claimed cavities on any...

Re: So upset!

What type of entrances do you have. I know it happens but I have never seen a sparrow kill an adult martin. When it comes to fighting I have seen SY martins do more fighting then sparrows. I've only seen sparrows peck eggs. I wander if a starling could have gotten in. Especially if you have SREH and...

Re: Entrance covers for modified houses

Let us know which house you have. If it is metal you could get some thin pieces of aluminum flashing or something and rivet it on. If it is a plastic house you could do something similar or you could use some of the corrugated plastic like elections signs are made out of.

Re: ? Cable diameter to re-string the winch ?

Both of my T14's have 3/16 galvanized steel cable. I think it is rated for close to 1,000 lbs which is obviously plenty for my houses. I can't imagine your set up weighs much more, if any, then a T14. My original one has 4 gourds under it too.

Re: Crescent doors

When I build my T14s I just cut out a square hole and the attach a plastic crescent plate over them. I'm guessing you could do the same on a metal house if you don't find any doors. Enlarge the original round hole and the put a plate over it.

Re: Southern Indiana (Hopefuly First Time Landlord) & update from earlier post

I've had luck with popcorn as well. The best bait I ever had was a baby HOSP that was due to nest. I caught it fluttering aroung my yard. I put it in my Blaine trap and caught 11 that afternoon. That is my best day of trapping. Once you get one it leave it in as long as you can it will draw in other...
