Re: AAA Rack Issue-Help

Thanks Dale! I'm glad they can be replaced because all 3 of mine are worn out. The aluminum is rubbing on aluminum and I see bad wear in places.

AAA Rack Issue-Help

Hope everyone had a good year!! I have 3 AAA gourd rack systems that I have used for years and really like them. I do have an issue with the nylon glide tabs which keep the aluminum hub from rubbing the 2" pole. They have worn out over the years . Can they be replaced? If so where can I buy them? Ho...

Re: Martins and Blue Birds

Thank ya'll for the advice. I'm going to take the gourd down tomorrow and put it on a shepard's hook nearby, as you recommended. I think this will work. My colony is well established. Funny watching the 2 Blue Birds trying to fend off about 100 Martins all day. I think they might give up but I don't...

Martins and Blue Birds

Good Afternoon Everyone! Hope you are all having a good start to the Martin Season. I have not posted lately but need some advice now. I have 3 AAA gourd racks on the western shore of Mobile Bay. There are 48 natural and artificial gourds. I have lots of birds this year, as usual and they are about ...

Re: Help choosing PM housing site at nature center

Seems like a good opportunity to teach the kids about birds and not to harm them.
I would put the housing site in whichever location is the furthest from tall trees.
Hawks will prevent nesting faster than just about anything.

Picture Cruise Ship and Martins

Here is a picture of first Martins of 2018 with cruise ship leaving Mobile Bay.
Birds didn't wait for me to finish putting the gourds up.
Counted 8 birds today.

Martins in Mobile AL

I thought with the cold weather the Martins would be late so I waited until this week-end to put up my 3 gourd racks. The racks are actually in Mobile Bay so I have to wade out to put them up. It is very inconvenient but it gets them away from the trees and hawk attacks. I put the racks up yesterday...

Thank!
This is good information. I will try this when I take them down. May get a few more years out of them.

Yes. This is an old house that I added a new telescoping pole to. When putting these in the bay, I attach a 2" chain link fence post to a 6" wooden piling. The telescoping pole is dropped down into this 2"post. This way it can be easily removed each season. All the piling you see in the pictures are...

Actually I have liked the telescoping poles over the years (strength against wind and ease of use)but they do begin to get hard to manage as they get older. I am a pretty big guy so I can slide them up and down fairly easily. As I get older, I am going to need something easier to operate. The alumin...

Sorry for the confusion. The attached picture of the house and birds is from last year. Many of those are young birds. At that time of year (July-August) I have counted 400 birds. Some visitors of course.

Mobile Bay Sunrise

This is a sunrise on Mobile Bay before houses were put up for the year.
Oh and I would like to use winches but the salt would probably destroy them quickly. I like the AAA rope and pulley system. Seems to withstand the weather.

They love Mobile Bay. You can see my profile for exact setup. This is year 13 I believe. I had them in my yard years ago but the hawks are such a problem I had to move them further away from the trees. It is so much easier to work the houses (nest checks etc.) on dry land. But they love the security...

Trio-Telescoping Pole

It has become more difficult to raise and lower my telescoping poles. What is the best way to lubricate them so they go up and down easier? WD-40 might gum them up. 3 in 1 oil good? What about carbonite powder? I have some of this. Forgot to mention the poles are mounted in about 1-2 feet of water i...

Martins in Mobile Alabama!!

Really bad storm came through last night. High winds on Mobile Bay. Southeast at about 40mph. Quess it is good to make sure all the houses are secure now rather than later. Saw 3 ASY male birds come in just as it was getting dark. Glad they are coming back!!

I agree with the drainage holes being very important. I am going to try what Emil suggested and seal the inside of the gourds. Mobile is the wettest city in the continental US, in fact it is storming as I write this. Keeping the gourds dry is a problem for me.
