Re: Why use pine straw in your gourds?

I’ve always used pine needles. 100% of my martins use the pine needles as the base for their nest, as they gather more needles, twigs, leaves, and sometimes, mud to complete the nest.

Re: Hurricane Ida...hope all you Louisiana landlords fairedwell.

Hi all.. first chance for me to get on here since hurricane Ida tore thru Laplace, Louisiana.. Lots of severe damage here. I was blessed compared to most. Some shingle damage and all fences down but others got so much worse. Silver lining though. So many big trees blown down. My martins will have a ...

Re: Haskell Troyer tunnel trap

Sounds like you have the sparrows in retreat Tom! I agree with the mosquito remark. Always makes me laugh when people ask that. I have to tell them that actually the purple martins favorite food, are dragon flies, which eat mosquitos. So having martins will result in you having more mosquitos, not l...

Re: Haskell Troyer tunnel trap

Sounds good Tom.. I am a big believer in modifying things to make them fit my particular needs. Sounds like making the trigger easier to trip and harder to avoid would be a good move.. I’ve got both my houses rigged up with your pvc elbow vent idea. 4 on each side.. 2 on the roofs. The elbow vents ar...

Re: fledgling question

Yes, unfortunately in nature , and of course with purple martins, as well, they all don’t make it. Being a landlord for these awesome birds is all about helping them be as successful as possible. But you can’t expect to have 100% success, as much as we all try to.. And losing just one hurts, but it’...

Re: fledgling question

Tom is right. The female lays one egg a day. Thus the hatch days are staggered and so are the times they are mature enough to fly.

Is that a sparrow I hear?

Theres a commercial that comes on t.v quite often here. In the background you can hear a male HOSP sounding the mate call chirp. My reflex automatically tells me to get up, grab my pellet rifle, go outside the patio doors and look to see where the little sneak is… then I realize… oh.. it’s the tv… !...

Re: Crows as Predators ??

PS. My post above is from my personal experience. Obviously I can’t guarantee a crow will never take a full size fledgling from a porch.. but from my experience, I have never seen it happen.. but have seen crows steal eggs and baby chicks from tree nesting birds, many times..

Re: Crows as Predators ??

Absolutely a crow will! I have seen crows take eggs from mockingbird nests. Take young chicks from bird nests. If given the chance, they will absolutely pluck a young Martin from a porch. Crows are smart and cunning. Best defense is to provide deep cavities for your martins.. Be aware when crows are...
