Re: Sparrow Trap Placement

Hi all I've actually had luck with the Sparrow Audio Module and trap. They also make a "cage" that you can mount the Audio Module and trap on I've caught about 5 HOSP this year, first year I've used it. I also have 2 of the repeating traps. What worked for me is putting one out by my Martin Houses. ...

Re: Hoping to be a new Landlord

Yes they are still around. I see them flying around but not go into the gourd. But in all honesty I haven't really watched them to see where they land but I also can hear them. The snake guard is 8" x 24" and the top of it is 6 1/2' off the ground. I'm probably going to add a 6" PVC pipe when they l...

Re: Hoping to be a new Landlord

Hi ya'll - I have bad news. I had 5 eggs in my gourd and they were to hatch on 5/24/21. I did a nest check on 5/18 and 5/22. Since they were supposed to hatch on 5/24 I was going to give them a few days before I checked. I checked on 5/28 and they were all GONE!!! No babies, no eggs. I have a Snake/...

Re: Fire

Thanks Ed and CAK. I've never had any smoke go that far (300'). I was more concerned with the smell of something burning. Of course it' raining outside right now, and predicted to rain for the next 4 days. Not that I can't start a fire in the rain I'm just not going to stand in it to control the fir...

Fire

Good morning all - I need some advice. I have a big pile of trees I need to burn. The pile is a result of the 4 year drought that we had, the trees fell and I need to burn them. Also a result of some clearing I've been doing. The pile is about 300' from the Martin house. It's been raining almost eve...

Re: Hoping to be a new Landlord

Thanks for the info Archer. I couldn't find a published date just a 1997 Copyright date which would make it over 20 years old. I would hope that PMCA would have a more updated book then 1997. Hopefully it is updated just no publish date on it. I'll definitely keep a careful watch on the babies and c...

Re: Hoping to be a new Landlord

I AM A NEW LANDLORD, or do the eggs actually have to hatch to be considered a landlord? I was observing activity around my gourd #4 and apartment #3. After a few days I decided to see if the female is building a nest in one of those locations. I waited until I saw the Martins fly away to check it ou...

Re: Hoping to be a new Landlord

Hello all - I had a male and female show up on Friday (4/23/21). They were on my apartment 3 of my Sunset Inn. They stayed there for a couple of hours then went to the perch. Stayed there for a couple of hours also. Unfortunately it started raining really hard, we received 3.79", and they stayed on ...

Re: Sparrow Trap Placement

I finally got 2 House Sparrows in my trap. I was going to be away during the day for 3 days and couldn't check the trap so I disabled the trap by making sure the trap stayed in the up position so birds would go get the food on the other side of the swing arm. I came back and made sure the trap would...

Re: Sparrow Trap Placement

I have both food and nesting material, pine straw, in my traps. Nothing yet. An earlier post said they used white feathers as nesting material. I'm going to Walmart today to buy some. I also purchased 2 Sparrow chirping audio modules so once they get here I'll be trying them also. I also purchased G...

Re: Sparrow Trap Placement

I took the decoys out. Since I have 2 repeating traps I'll put one under a tree to see what happens. Right now I have them about 10 feet from the Martin houses since that is where they want to go. I don't see any feathers around so I'll go to Walmart tomorrow. Their website shows they have white fea...

Re: Sparrow Trap Placement

I just read this and am also having problems catching HOSP in my repeating trap. I'm going to try the nesting material idea. I just purchased a few Sparrow Guard traps and other traps from PMCA and will put them in when I receive them. I do have millet and water in the trap. I have a few Martin Deco...

Re: Reporting Losses

I am really sorry to hear about all the loses. I am trying to become a landlord but it looks like it might not be possible this year. I am wondering about the ASY's. I read they usually show up 4-6 weeks after the Scouts. Does anybody think they were affected by this winter storm?

Re: Hoping to be a new Landlord

Hello thanks for your reply. I do have a few trees around my house BUT the Purple Martin houses are about 80' from my house and the closest trees to the Purple Martin houses are about 62' and further, the PMCA book I purchases states the houses should be a least 40' from the closest tree. The 62' is...

Re: Hoping to be a new Landlord

I believe I'm doing everything right also. None of the trees, if they fall over, will hit the houses so I'm good on that aspect. I have 15 acres. It's fenced off into 10 acres (undeveloped) and the 5 I live on. From what I read on the PMCA forum people play the Dawnsong all times. Anywhere from 4am ...

Re: Hoping to be a new Landlord

Great - still waiting. I've been playing the Dawnsong 12 hours a day starting at 6:30am. I did have a bird land on the perch above the houses. I think it was a female. She stayed for a little while then left. I saw a bunch of black birds flying overhead but none are landing. Thanks for the reply. al...

Re: Hoping to be a new Landlord

Are there female scouts? I saw a bird sitting on the perch above the Purple Martin houses and I've never seen a bird perched there before, let alone close to the houses. I saw it when I came home from Bastrop and immediately went into the house to get my binoculars (I need a stronger pair). Anyway I...

Re: Landloards in Cedar Creek or Bastrop Texas area

WOW!! 110 years ago - impressive. I really appreciate your info and that I should have about a 95% of attracting the Martins this year. As far as my neighbor goes I just hate to think that her Martins are being killed. Oh well like you stated hopefully she'll learn and get rid of the owl houses. I'l...

Re: Landloards in Cedar Creek or Bastrop Texas area

Hi Sandra - Thanks for the info. I'll probably put out my "Dawnsong" speaker on the 29th or 30th of January just to see if I can get any Scouts. I was looking at last years Scout Study for Austin and somebody stated they saw them at the end of January. My houses Starling resistant doors. I also have...

Re: Landloards in Cedar Creek or Bastrop Texas area

I don't live in the Cedar Creek LAKE area. I live in Cedar Creek just outside of Austin. https://www.google.com/maps/@30.106878,-97.5469875,117m/data=!3m1!1e3 Not sure how to attach a photo so I've attached a link to my house on Googlemaps. I've had to replace my septic system so the image is not up...
