Re: Is that a sparrow I hear?

Theres a commercial that comes on t.v quite often here. In the background you can hear a male HOSP sounding the mate call chirp. My reflex automatically tells me to get up, grab my pellet rifle, go outside the patio doors and look to see where the little sneak is… then I realize… oh.. it’s the tv… ...

Re: Replacement Housing

Thanks Dave! My searches didn't return much information until I copied and pasted what you recommended. Now I have plenty to read and then some. I think I will just purchase a new setup for our other location. We have a lot of martins down here and I'm sure I would be able to attract a new colony bu...

Re: Replacement Housing

Yea I think I definitely need to put more thought into this. I attracted martins the first year I started as a landlord but I need to consider that I might not be so lucky next time. My thoughts were to expand at home where its needed and start fresh at the new place so it made sense to put the K-24...

Replacement Housing

Hi All, I'm seeking opinions on doing an "in place" swap of housing. My current 12 compartment Lone Star Goliad had 10 active nests this year and I want to expand to offer 24 compartments for 2022. I have already purchased a Troyer K-24 gourd rack which is totally different in design. My question is...

Re: Sparrow Trap Placement

Tom, I initially had the same problem with doves. What I done was mount the repeating trap on the side of a 6' wooden privacy fence about a foot from the top and a few feet from our other bird feeders. The doves only feed on the ground so they no longer mess with the trap. Since then I've been catch...

Re: HOSP takeover

A repeating trap works wonders. So far this year I've reached 109 caught (adults and fledglings) and 12 shot. An accurate pellet rifle is paramount because if you miss you are only giving these smart pests a PHD on sneakiness. I'm using a 22 cal. Benjamin Mararder with the Lothar Walther barrel and ...

Re: nest camera

I've been considering installing a nest cam but like you I'm not sure which one to try. I'd be interested to know which one the PMCA is using. It's crystal clear and seems to be very reliable.

Re: Sevin under Bluebird nest.

Thanks all. This morning I put some under the nest. I'll check again on Sunday. With this high humidity I hope it works. Brent Brent, Was it difficult to attract the bluebirds? I never tried because I didn't realize we had them in our area. We have a ton of them on our property in Mississippi but I...

Re: An Eastern Kingbird.....

No problem with martins but I've had other run-ins with these pest birds. We planted over 50 small oak trees at our camp and these little buggers continue to perch on them and destroy central leaders. You try to train a new leader and they break those. About 1/2 of our trees look like bushes.

Unbelievable, but expected. What do brainwashed minions know about this subject? I’m sure they don’t know or bother to find out, that it is perfectly legal, at actually encouraged by federal agencies, to eliminate non native invasive species such as HOSPS and starlings. Complete morons control and ...

Doing good and knowing thats right never gets old. Compassion is an incredible trait...Cool string. peace. The Martins and I thank you. Very true! While this season had its setbacks I gained quite a bit of knowledge from both folks here and my personal experiences. Mitigation plans are already in p...

Re: Luring sparrows with sparrow chick calls

I find white millet for bait is like sparrow candy. My repeating trap stays baited even when I leave for a couple days. When leaving I usually tie up the elevator so it wont catch native songbirds which we feed. When I return and set the trap the sparrows are accustomed to going in and out freely so...

Fall Out Shelter for jumpers

First "Happy Fathers Day" to all the dads out there. As I just found another near fledging baby on the ground here is my concern. I have a 3rd nest currently fledging and 7 nests due to fledge now and within the next couple of days. I'm reluctant to lower this unit even using the plug and string met...

Re: Hawk Attack-It never ends

Yep, I've seen more hawks and owls this year than the last few years combined. I never had an attack until this year and after the earlier owl and hawk attacks I enclosed my porches with 4x4 hog panels. I'm not even sure if this helps because both the martins and predators use it for perching. The b...

Hawk Attack-It never ends

So my colony has been hit with late freezing temperatures taking out several pairs. When that passed the Hawk and Owl attacks started taking out more birds. After that stopped I had some nests perish due to loss of parent(s). Now this gulf developing storm sent a very brief squall of high winds and ...
